Where does OG rank on the GROAT list?

Post#1 » by bozothepope » Wed Jan 3, 2024 12:09 am

Whenever we lose a classic Raptor, I always like to ponder where they rank on the All-Time Great Raptors list. OG is a tricky one so I'd love to hear what you think and where you'd rank him.

Accolades: 7+ years as a Raptor, was on the championship team (although that season was tumultuous for him and he didn't play in the playoffs), was our lone bright spot vs the Cavs in round 2 in 2018, always was one of the best defensive players in the league, hit a classic game winning shot in the bubble, started for us a ton, was hilarious off-court, etc.

Where are you ranking him? Who is he in front of? Who is he ranked behind?

Enh, in terms of what they accomplished as a Raptor?

1. Kawhi
2. Kyle
3. VC
4. Siakam
5. Bosh
6. DeMar
7. Freddie All-Star
8. Scottie
9. TMac
10. Jose/TJ
10. JV
11. Marc Gasol
12. OG
13. MoPete?

It's a good question. OG was both here a long time and on a lot of very good teams, but on some stinkers as well.

Gasol has to be higher than T Mac. He played a key role in the championship and then the following year we had second best record. He had that classic Embiid 0 point game in the year after the title. I think OG should be higher than JV, Jose , TJ and Tmac.

Your list is a good starting point. I have a different order re: the top 7, but it's the same 7 guys. Then it gets trickier. I think you have McGrady way too high tho. No way he's higher than OG or any of those other guys. A bunch of guys (Serge, Norm, Alvin, Antonio Davis, even Stoudamire), I'd have way before Tracy.

Around 11-20.

If Siakam stays for a few more years it will be interesting where he ends up in the rankings.

11-20. We pretty much won our title without him.

just outside the top 10.....missing the 2019 championship run hurt him in the standings....while it gave a big boost to others like Siakam, FVV, Gasol, Ibaka.

Top-10

1. Kawhi
2. Lowry
3. VC
4. Siakam
5. Derozan
6. Bosh
7. Gasol
8. Fred
9. Scottie
10. OG

Side note, Scottie will almost certainly end up top-3 on that list by the time he retires. I just put him near the bottom since he's only had a half season of elite production so far.

Hmmm, I'd have...

Kawhi 1a (best actual player, didn't play long enough)/VC 1b (greatest, hate all you want, he put TO on the map)
Lowry (most beloved, not actually the greatest)
Siakam
Bosh
DeMar
Scottie (he'll get up to VC level before he's done)
TMac (I still like what he was more than Fred, even before his explosion in ORL)
Damon/FVV
Gasol
ADavis
OG
JV
MoPete

Likely in the 11-20 range.

Off the top of my head here is my top 10 (in no particular order):

Kyle, Kawhi, Vince, Pascal, Bosh, DeMar, Marc, JV, Fred, Damon

He's then in that next mix of guys. Somewhere around MoPete, Jose and Amir (three of my fave's so biased).

Without really giving it too much thought, I'd probably have it like this.

1. Kyle
2. DD
3. Kawhi (he's the hardest to rank because he was only here for one year, but that one year was so impactful)
4. Vince
5. Pascal
6. Bosh
7. FVV
8. Jose
9. OG
10. JV

After that would be Scottie, but even by the end of this season he might have already passed JV, OG, and Jose.

Then some grouping of Gasol, Ibaka, TMac, MoPete, Antonio Davis, Norm, and Damon.

Haha interesting. I hit send on my list before seeing yours and I just noticed we have the exact same top 7. Not bad.

I put TMac there because it was clear he was about to blow up and he was more important to that team than Gasol was to the teams he thrived on (even though they were better teams). He was easily the 2nd best player at 20 years old. JV is probably too high, you're right. And I did forget Damon, who would be below Scottie on my list.

Was OG one of the best three players on any of these teams? Only this last crappy one. Jose and TJ were more important at the time.

I've thought long and hard about that top 7. I think Scottie's first all-star appearance will place him solidly 8th, whenever that happens.

I'd say high on the 11-20 side for me, maybe as high as 11. Really tricky when you factor in 2019 but man he was so consistent and had the hardest job on the floor most nights for more than half his career

Serge, OG, JV, Norm, Gasol are all hard to rank but I would have Serge at the top of that group for sure

Totally agree with all the posters that have Spicy above Bosh, he's earned that
