Pulse check : Thoughts on Darko?

Post#1 » by Scase » Sun Jan 14, 2024 10:55 pm

So the "Fire Darko" types of threads have gone rather M.I.A. since the trade and we've picked up a few wins. I'm curious if people have softened on him, still think he's trash, or now see that with a somewhat competent roster think he's not as bad as before?

Personally, I always thought he was flawed (still is), but I never thought he was the true issue plaguing this team. His rotations can still be a bit suspect, some questionable decisions, etc. Ultimately I think he's a decent rookie coach with room to grow, and a solid developmental coach.

Now with a somewhat decent/balanced roster, I think we are more seeing what he is capable of vs giving him 37 PFs that can't shoot, and telling him to make due.

Offense is a lot better considering we don't even have a top 20 player but there's no excuse for our defense being as bad as it is and that falls on coaching. His rant after the Lakers game made me gain respect for him but overall, I still feel he's in over his head as a head coach. Seems like the perfect assistant coach.

He was hired to be a development coach. Expedite the process and give him more to work with.
Organization can be defined as an organized body of people with a particular purpose. Not random.

He's here to lay the foundation of the team not win a chip.

He bought a little goodwill from me with the rant. He's been a bit underwhelming, but pretty much in line with your thoughts. Putting any excess blame on his shoulders is absolving Bobby and Masai for a pretty poorly constructed roster.

All vibes only. Very poor in managing rotations and his obsession with Dennis doesn’t help

Should be an assistant coach. He’s not cut out to be a head coach at the highest level

Poll options are strange so I won't vote but here's my thoughts.

I like his philosophy and truly believe that the shift will be worth it long term. He's getting guys to understand a better way to play, and it will increase our ceiling long term. He's helping guys feel confident and play freely which is good as well, and he upholds a level of togetherness that is much needed here.

However, I think he's not an NBA had coach. Doesn't manage rotations well, timeouts are poorly timed, and I don't feel he has the back bone to sit a guy when he needs to. He'll be fine for a year or two, but when it's time to win, he can't be our be guy.

Still too soon to say

Coaching is really hard to evaluate given we aren't privy to a lot of the behind the scenes stuff that can impact development i.e. working with players n X or Y habits. On-court his rotations have been better of late but I think most will agree it took way too long to go with the obvious "bench Dennis" option. That said, the rotation he has to work with overall is simply not great? It's been better ever since the O.G. trade but the bench is still not good besides Boucher and Trent (when his shot is falling).

That rant was pure fire so neutral for now, could change if he can get our guys to remember how to defend.

Our performance was down last quarter, it's time to schedule a retro and figure out what went right, what we got lucky on, and where we can improve

I want to first give him a chance with whatever team we're trying to assemble but I've not been impressed

If you're looking to win games, he's not your guy, but if we're going into a full-on developmental rebuild after moving on from Siakam, then let's continue seeing what he has to offer there. We can get a real coach when the time is right.

He's hired to develop. Team is rebuilding. If he develops all these guys into real players he's done his job

He seems like a good leader, seems loved by his players, but seems like he's learning on the job basketball-wise still. No point in making any change now. Play it out, see how he continues to improve or doesn't.

The roster has ben fine. Masai and Bobby had nothing to do with the team being down 20 in so many first halves..Darko just did not have the team ready to compete..his offensive system held us back with zero defensive strategy....Barnes|Siakam|OG went to Philly and won game 5 to have all the experts saying it would go back to Philly for Game 7. Darko as a Head Coach is in full development.

The Lakers rant at least made everyone forget the Steph Curry comment
