The Athletic: Wolves showing interest in Dennis Schroeder

Post#1 » by Dalek » Tue Feb 6, 2024 7:37 pm

Read on Twitter

The Wolves have Mike Conley and not much else after him and for a playoff run Dennis Schroeder is on their shortlist. The other candidates like Tyus and Tre Jones, Kyle Lowry, and Monte Morris. I think Dennis has probably been the best of the bunch this past year and produced when starting or coming off the bench. Good numbers on a bad team and he has recent playoff experience

Dennis's numbers: 14/6 on 44/35/86

I do think Minny is a team that no one has really discussed too much, but they have a real shot to be a title team.

To Minny:
Dennis Schroeder
Gary Trent Jr. (Minny kid)

To Toronto:
Naz Reid
Slo Mo
Nickeil Alexander-Walker

Gives us a better, younger stretch C plus NAW is a guy RJ knows, is Canadian and helps make a case for SGA to sign here in the future. I know Minny loves Naz, but like IQ their GM might to a goodwill gesture and want to give him the opportunity to start somewhere.

Best news of the day and that includes Barnes' all-star nod.

Pretty tough trade to make from a salary matching perspective. Wolves are not likely gutting their bench defense though.

There’s a whole thread already discussing this.

I thought it would be fair to start a thread because The Athletic referenced the interest from Minny in an article. It seems legitimate and not commonly discussed.

Naz Reid is signed cheaply and he's really good. Theyre not giving him up for DS

seems like they're plan c/d

The highest-profile name that has been linked to the Wolves is Washington Wizards point guard Tyus Jones. The Apple Valley native started his career in Minnesota and blossomed into one of the most efficient guards in the league during his time as Ja Morant’s backup in Memphis. He is as close to a Conley clone as one could get, not big or overpowering athletically, but supremely intelligent and with a clutch gene when the ball finds him in big moments. He is hitting 39 percent of his 3s as a starter with the Wizards, a career-best mark, and is always right at the top of the league in assist-to-turnover ratio.

The Wolves and Wizards have discussed Jones, league sources said. Washington is believed to be looking for a first-round pick in return for him. If the rebuilding team sticks to that asking price, the Wolves will not be able to match it unless they can construct some multiteam deals that bring a pick from another team. Minnesota does have a surplus of second-round picks, including a juicy 2024 selection from Memphis, to throw into an offer. With Jones set to be a free agent at the end of this season, it will be interesting to see if the Wizards can get a first-round pick for him.

Another possibility is Detroit’s Monte Morris, who played for Connelly in Denver. Morris just started playing for the Pistons after missing the first half of the season with a right quadriceps strain. The Wolves have had discussions on several fronts with the Pistons, league sources said. As our James Edwards III noted, Connelly tried to pry Morris from Washington last season to no avail.

Jones’ brother Tre could be another possibility since the San Antonio Spurs are nowhere close to competing this season. Tre is not the shooter that his brother is, hitting just 28 percent from deep. But he is bigger than Tyus, a better defender and knows what an offense needs to function.

Toronto’s Dennis Schröder and Kyle Lowry, who was recently traded from Miami to Charlotte and likely will be moving on via trade or buyout, are two other names on the radar.
Finch coached Lowry for half of a season in Toronto before he was hired to take over in Minnesota.

It'd definitely take more to do it, of course.

Wonder if Schroeder+Poeltl can get Naz+filler?

You would have to add a first round pick(s) to get Naz Reid in a Schroeder deal

Naz Reid isn't available. Get a pick or grab Miller. Minot is also interesting but his shooting is questionable.

Wonder if they are interested in the expiring of Porter, I would take Leonard Miller with a few 2 years contracts (and picks) to help their salary situation next year.

Schroder and McDaniels for SlowMo and Miller works. It'll clear off a fair bit of cap for us.

Getting Naz Reid would be nice. The Thunder and Pistons picks going there and a heavy night of drinking could help convince them.

probably not enough.

Schröder + Jakob + OKC first for Naz Reid + Slo Mo + NAW

followed by

Brown + DET 2nd for Fournier + DAL pick

25 & under

Quickly - Lewis Jr.
Barrett - Alexander-Walker
Dick - Nwora
Barnes -
Reid - Porter

TOR 2024 (6th)
TOR 2025
DAL 2024 (16th)
IND 2024 (18th)
IND 2026

try to keep the pick both years and this team could be nice by 2026.

Why in God's name would the Wolves want Poeltl?

I feel like we should be able to do a little better than what the Wolves could offer for Schroeder. Not to mention they'll have tax problems in the not too distant future so I do find it a bit suspect that they're interested in Schroeder.

This seems too skewed in our favour, but you reminded me that Jalen's brother Jaden is on Minnesota. Maybe they take him as a throw-in.
