(Poll) "They're Right There!" Tracker

As the losing streak and motions continue to be gone through, I thought it might be fun to keep track/predict the highest deficit that Matt(and perhaps company) attempt to claim "the Raptors are right there!" This can also include saying the deficit in a hopeful manner("18 point game, Jack!") or proclaiming that "We have a game!" when really we do not. I do however think that competitive goal setting such as "Can they cut it to 20 by the 6 minute mark?" should be excluded. I'll set the starting point at 13 because I think last night they went at least that high.

Damn, three times too. Clearly I’m deficient.

I can't believe my brain just read that in Matt Devlin's voice

The thing I will say in Devlin's defense is that I watch way too much League Pass and can say that there are a lot of cringey play-by-play callers in the NBA. The other thing I will say in his defense is that I have met him twice and he appears to be as classy as he portrays on TV.

Having said all that, he is arguably the cringiest and I often watch the other team's broadcast just to avoid him.

When Devlin calls out, "It's a 3 point game," it reminds me of Walmart.

Even though there are ten self serve checkouts, leaving only 4 to 6 full serve checkouts, they still pay an employee to stand at the entrance to the full serve checkouts to tell me which line is the shortest. I'VE BEEN DETERMINING THE SHORTEST LINE IN A GROCERY STORE FOR OVER 50 YEARS. I DON'T NEED YOUR HELP!! DON'T INSULT ME BY POINTING ME TO A LINE!

When Devlin calls out that its a 3 point game, he is no better than the Walmart employee, we know how to read the score which is never not on the screen. He is treating us like we are stupid.

This right here, 20pts is apparently "not as big of a lead as it used to be, due to the 3 ball", completely ignoring that we suck at shooting the 3 ball lol.

Ha, I know people who worked heavily in sports TV production and I did a tiny bit.

Unfortunately it's really their job. You either sell the game as competitive or you go off on tangents that distract that people from the ass kicking that's happening. Goal is to keep people later into the games for ad revenue. Advertisers aren't stupid, they'll identify H2H and M2M drops and reduce their ad spend accordingly.

For instance, in baseball, if the Jays are losing like 10-0, ever notice the bug (the score display in the bottom right) disappears for long stretches? That's because if you tune in, they don't want you to see the score and immediately bounce out.

I honestly didn't start this thread to bash the broadcast, I just find the increasingly hard sell they are forced to do funny personally. Last night was next level with Matt excitedly calling out a lead getting cut from 16 to 13.

"No 20 point lead is safe in THIS league!"

Realistically though, cutting it to 15 from 20+ seems like a point where we might get an overzealous exclamation from one of our colour commentators.

So many don't realize that when Devlin (and plenty of other play-by-play announcers in general) do this, they're catering to ultra-casuals such as the Tangerine Fan Angle kids and parents, who are featured when the game returns from a commercial break, in order to keep them tuned in

Yeah Devlin is just doing his job. He and the rest are better than most of the league

I remember Chuck Swirsky was also very protective of the team when he was here. Anyone remember if he was more or less homerific than Matt Devlin?
