My earliest b-ball memory was the Sixers-Blazers games being replayed late on US TV (they wouldn't broadcast them live). Doctor J. vs. Walton (if he was healthy). Great rivalry.

I don't love that he had become a bit of a caricature. But I enjoyed him for most of career. There was no doubting his passion for the game, and in his prime he was both a good broadcaster and great player.
He was my father's favorite player, now both have passed. That photo of John Saunders, Walton and Kobe is a reminder of how fragile life can be. RIP

RIP to a legend both on the court and in the booth. I was too young to see him play, but man were his calls and his voice iconic.

I remember Bill Walton as a voice on those NBA on NBC broadcasts from back in the day. RIP.

I recently watched his 30 for 30. Knew him as a broadcaster and his legend as a player, but I never got a sense of his on-court prowess until recently. His game is always associated with "What if?", but for a what if, he still got 2 titles, a Finals MVP, and an MVP under his belt. RIP.

His "what if" is top 10 all time "what if". Simmons does his belt thing of who was the best player in the world during the history of the NBA and he has Walton holding the belt for a year or 2 in the late 70s.

Larry Bird said Bill Walton was a complete player without any deficit in his game. Bill Walton was a walk-on on the '86 Celtics Championship squad (widely considered to be one of the greatest teams in basketball history) after many years of injury. There was no real expectation that he would be able to perform. In a pre-season practice he played a 3 on 3 against prime McHale, prime Bird, and a third Celtic (can't remember if it was Parish or another) and beat them. McHale and Walton talked a lot of trash to each other through out, with McHale making fun of Walton''s stutter. But by the end of the game McHale was quiet. Remember this was a Walton who was far past his prime. And he was still a force to be reckoned with.

He was never close to Jokic as an offensive player but he was a significantly better shot blocker (Jokic has never even had a season with 1.0 BPG and Walton led the league in blocks one year).
