Wiggins for Olynyk + McDaniels?

Post#1 » by srhcan » Wed May 29, 2024 10:42 pm

The Golden State Warriors are expected to be active during the offseason. Joe Lacob has previously noted how he wants the team to duck under the luxury tax, and the current roster failed to qualify for the postseason. As such, the Warriors front office could explore potential trade opportunities to improve the roster.

According to Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report, one deal that could make sense for the Warriors would be sending Andrew Wiggins to the Toronto Raptors in return for Kelly Olynyk and Jalen McDaniels. Wiggins struggled for consistency last season and may be viewed as a legitimate trade chip.

“The Warriors seem as aware of their spending as ever, as they should be,” Buckley wrote. “They failed to make the playoffs in three of the past five years. That’s a tough fact to marry with their free-wheeling spending style…This deal not only would save them some money—Olynyk and McDaniels will make a combined $17.5 million next season—but it could also widen the rotation with a stretch center (Olynyk) and a three-and-D swingman (McDaniels).”

Olynyk would give the Warriors legitimate size, defense and floor spacing. His skillset would fit well with Steve Kerr’s offensive and defensive system. He could become a legitimate part of the rotation, either in the starting lineup or off the bench. McDaniels defense would also come in handy as the Warriors look to find more balance on both sides of the court.

If Golden State is looking to shed some salary and add depth at multiple positions, a deal like the one Buckley proposes could be a solid option for the front office to explore.

What do you guys think? Can Wiggins revive his career after coming back home?

If it was that cheap then yeah you should. I'd rather keep Kelly & offer something different like brown or do a 3way trade. But yeah Wiggins should be a target if he comes cheaply

I don't trust any source that describes McDaniels as a 3+D swingman

Pick any from Bruce Brown, Agbaji, McDaniels and Boucher and I would trade for Wiggins.

Warriors need Kelly because he is 6-11 C. Why they would be interested in 6-4 Guard like Brown?

So we are taking on what is viewed as a negative contract for part of the return on a late 1st and an expiring? And we are taking more money this year? That is horrible. Warriors have to pay to do this.
When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?

Please advise….

Where's "F*ck no!" as an option?!

What a truly HORRIBLE idea to essentially lock in the franchise's ceiling for the next 3+ years to Wiggins because after IQ & Scottie get paid between RJ, Wiggins & Poeltl this team is completely tapped out and you're out of your mind if you think some trade involving Yak in the future will somehow catapult us into contenders.

That's a crappy mid-ass team for the next 3+ years and a giant waste of time -- EASY PASS!

Makes no sense to get Wiggins. We aren’t close to winning.

I wouldn't take on that contract for ANY asset. He has a player option for $30M in 26/27 when he'll be 32 and has a consistent track record of mediocrity that you can bank on.

Fun fact, Olynyk has produced more on court value than Wiggins in their careers. Per BBREF:

VORP: Wiggins 2.8, Olynyk 12.6
BPM: Wiggins -1.5, Olynyk 0.8
WS normalized for 48mpg: Wiggins 0.058, Olynyk 0.125 (normalized bc Kelly has played longer and the gap is even bigger for totals)

Pick other random ones, like NBA's weird "PIE" metric, same trend.

Timeline is off. Player is mid. No thanks.

I should reiiterate, my idea would be to give him heavy mins, rehab value, and hopefully move him again down the line. I don't love his contract, or him as a player. But if he can be Wiggins from a couple years ago, that gets us more than Olynyk + McD

we didn't extend olynyk just to trade him; wiggins for brown + mcdaniels.

Picks need to come back our way to even consider it.

Even though I'm not a fan of the trade as proposed, Wiggins at the 3 in the starting lineup is pretty interesting if he can stay on the court.

IQ, RJ, Wiggins, Scottie, Poeltl looks like a firmly middle of the pack starting 5 with some upside depending on the 3 youngish guys.

Well I'm sure we could use Brown to find the equivalent of Kelly O to send to the warriors

I am not totally against trying to rehab Wiggins but I need to get paid for it as you said and I think Kelly has value as well on top. He also signed an extension so I wouldn’t be comfortable moving him immediately like that unless that is what he asked for. Brown for Wiggins and Moody seems decent to me. But I really like Moody.

Hell no, I'd rather have Kelly
