To tank or retool?

With some cap space, the Raptors have the opportunity to get a free agent or two. If they were to add an free agent or two, the Raptors would get better. Darko and a revamp roster could make the playoffs but it might be on a path to the treadmill.

If the Raps don’t get any decent names and stay the course they could maybe get a decent pick next draft yeah but being patient; will it cause damage to the core? Will the kids understand? Feel betrayed or be disappointed with leaving them to be left to their own devices?

Excellent title question which no one has thought of before

This team will give every chance for the team to succeed by hopefully making solid long term additions to the team this offseason. Now if they still suck half way through the year, I'm sure you'll see tanking like trades at the deadline.

If Scottie/RJ/IQ are left to carry the team themselves, I don’t see what grounds they have to complain. Even if we lose a lot, even if the C rotation is Olynyk/Rookie and the starting SF is Ochai Agbaji. They’re all young and still looking to establish what they can be in this league.

I guess the damage to be concerned about is them learning losing habits, lazy defense and the like. That’s why you hire a good “culture” and development coaching staff, as the Raptors sought to do.

What free agent is out there that wants to play in Toronto and that will help fill our gaps? Might I remind you that our highest profile FA signing was Hedo Turkoglu or Demarre Carroll (take your pick). Even in our contending seasons (DD + Lowry), our championship season, and the moderately season after that, FAs were not flocking to sign with our team. They still preferred to avoid our team despite our success, the city's reputation as a world class city, and a roster fit for that potential FA signing.

I say tank. Tanking worked for us before and will work for us again. All it takes is patience and the realization that our current team is not one or two pieces away from being a contender -- it is 5 or 6, including missing a star or two.

Well, tanking works 10 out of 10 green fonts.

Even if we don't tank for another 10 seasons (which I want), at least tank only for next years draft which supposedly has a lot of high end talent. That's all I ask for at the minimum.

Trick question. Neither.

They are just going to be bad (25-30 wins) as is.

1. This franchise will never enter a season to tank intentionally but they've let it be known that they won't make win now moves to start the year
2. Highly unlikely we will be a cap room team, and if we do open cap room, it will be to facilitate a trade

Tank.

If you've been watching the playoffs, you need high end talent to win. Most viable way to get that is the draft.

Spend more money into scouting. Draft well in the late teens and early 20's.

Won't be bad enough to be bottom 5 again if healthy and can't count on getting lucky like the Atlanta Hawks.

Dink Pate, Justin Edwards, Zvonimir Ivisic, Michael Ruzic interest me outside of the lottery.

I don't think tanking will be an option this season, unless we have major injuries again.

People use "retooling" way too loosely, it's lost all meaning

We're in the middle of a rebuild, we aren't retooling

Said it multiple times, and discussed multiple times.
BBQ + Siakam + Poeltl is barely getting us to 500, so trading Siakam is clearly not going to put us above .500.
So what exactly is the expectation for retool with BBQ where we unlikely to make the play-in.

AGREED.

The only case it can happen is if Barnes and Quick both take a leap. Rj will also need to be consistent and improve his 3pt%.

They are young, IT'S not 100% absolutely impossible, just unlikely.

Rebuild slowly through the draft and using salary.

Correct.

That's been their style always.
