It's hard to know exactly how close Toronto came to striking a deal with the Dallas Mavericks at the time, but multiple reporters have suggested the Raptors had serious talks with the Mavericks for Porzigins in a deal that centered around Goran Dragic and a first-round pick.

"The Raptors’ front office long harbored an affinity for Porziņģis, and Toronto was one of the teams on his preferred list of trade destinations away from New York," Yahoo's Jake Fischer wrote.

At the time, ESPN insider Bobby Marks told Zach Lowe that he thought Porzingis was going to be traded to Toronto before the Raptors eventually opted to go in another direction and send Dragic and a first-round pick to the San Antonio Spurs for Thad Young and a second-round pick.

Somehow, this trade keeps getting worse

The cascading effects of this are kinda nuts to think about. We get tingus, we don't trade our pick for Jak, maybe we keep Siakam/FVV. Interesting butterfly effect to think about.

Man I must be missing something about Thad. About ten years too late imo .

This was pretty much known at the time. A risk I am sure they wish they would have taken now

Shams/Woj/Lowe were reporting this the night before the deadline so i don't doubt that it's true.

The Thad Young deal was far and away the worst trade of Masai's career. Poeltl trade was more impactful and bad because it locked us into a poor direction. But in a vacuum, FRP for starting center is reasonable. Trading down 10-15 spots to get Thad Young, at that point in his career, made no logical sense even at that time. We desperately needed a backup point guard and shooting but we traded for yet another 6'9" PF who couldn't shoot (not to mention, way over the hill).

There was more to the deal. Porzingis was making 31 million in 21/22, 33 in 22/23 and had a player option for 36 million this season I believe. Dragic was earning 18 million in 21/22 I think. So the Raps would have had to make up a lot more salary than just Dragic for one (best case Boucher and Birch I think, worst case OG or Trent), and we'd also be way into the tax for the last few years. The main point of the Thad deal was to avoid that.

This was known at the time.

The fact we went ahead and pivoted to friggen Thad Young is almost comical

Acquiring Porzingis means no Yak, and we finally have our floor spacing big man.

The rumour was trent. Which honestly, in hindsight definitely isn't a bad choice, I don't think they would have ever done OG. Getting under the tax was likely more important since the team wasn't expected to be particularly good. But I'm sure they could have managed to shed more salary elsewhere, they are smart guys after all.

This is old news.

I think he eventually went for Dinwiddie, who probably had some value back then. Crazy that Dinwiddie was traded for Porzingis, Kyrie and he's so crap now the Raptors decided to waive him. Now Porzingis and Kyrie are facing off against each other in the finals and the Raptors. Oh, and Thad was traded in the Dinwiddie trade, too.

Beyond having to add more than just Dragic for the deal to work, KP at the time was coming off a string of injuries and nobody was sure if he was even good anymore. It was like a 50/50 shot whether or not he'd be out of the league by the end of his contract, which at the time, was bandied around as almost a negative value deal.

I didn't like the Thad deal, but I was also against trading for KP at the time due to salary/injury concerns.

Even then, 57 games this year and not available in the playoffs. Great when he plays

Healthy Porzingis next to Scottie would be a great core to build around. Unicorns stay unions though

This was reported that trade deadline and made me depressed we didn’t get him. He was basically a salary dump for the mavs but dinwiddie did help them get to the wcf and got them kyrie,

Masai was trying to make the team better but those deals didn’t work out so he went for Thad and Jakob instead.

Pretty sure it was Trent and a 1st for a Porzingis making 30M a year. We made the right call on passing on that one.

i have to agree it's revisionist history

Porzingis was considered a net negative at that time.
A lot of realgmers were against trading for Porzingis, esp if it involved GTJ, let alone an FRP
plus at that time, Porzingis didn't take his conditioning seriously

The issue with porzingis was the money. We couldn't afford everyone without him, then you throw an extra 30m a year and it becomes almost impossible. In hindsight you ship out siakam to pair prozingis with scottie as that is a dream partnership but Masai was in his playin mode at the time.

Other than the Scottie pick, pretty much everything they did in that time period was the wrong move.
