"Bye, Gary" is my prediction. You and Brown can be seat mates on the one-way flight out.

A deal with someone else. The Raps had ample opportunity to extend him and haven't done so.

Gary can't perform coming off the bench, and he can only play great when games don't really matter (no pressure to him). Pass. Masai has officially lost this trade

Re: Gary Trent Jr Predictions
Gary's bench vs starter stuff is overblown and has more to do with who he has been playing with and his role in the offence, which with improved depth should not be an issue anymore (and assuming they are bringing him back, I'd expect improved depth to be a target for the off-season).
They should absolutely be willing to outbid an MLE offer from another team to keep him. They probably shouldn't be willing to do that by very much. Say, 15M starting salary vs 13M from another team. The reason they won't have extended him is he has every reason to see if he can find a ~20M deal in FA - if he doesn't, he falls back on the MLE market to find a deal. Which is when the Raps' offer would be the best available. If he finds a big deal, good for him. In the more likely case he doesn't, I'd prefer to see him back, either as the 5th starter (if we don't find an upgrade there) to start the season, or as a bench scorer providing shooting depth.
As much as I'd love to think Gradey can just be a starter now, I believe he needs more seasoning and a supersub role is more in line with where his development is, and I don't want him rushed into a role where he gets beat up every night. Better to bring him along slowly and keep the confidence level up. And having a guy like Gary who can start over him but also who can be pulled back to a bench role if Gradey starts to look ready is exactly what I'd hope for.
And an offer like that to Gary can still leave us a) cap room bigger than the MLE to outbid teams on MLE guys to add to Gary in terms of rotation depth or b) room under the tax to make a full MLE offer; assuming Brown is no longer in the equation.

Re: Gary Trent Jr Predictions
I think he's back on a MLE type deal, short term prove it deal. He's still young-ish and can take advantage of the new TV deal for his next contract. I do expect him to eventually be on another team though before the end of this new deal.

Re: Gary Trent Jr Predictions
Said it before that I would only pay Trent 15/season so something like 3/45 with a player option.
Don’t care for guys who are one dimensional and only looks good when the team begins to tank. He's not good enough to start on our team and has always been bad off the bench.

Lakers are probably stuck with the tax MLE unless they lose LeBron.

Don't latch onto these types of players. Go cheaper temporarily and replace via draft or trade.

Re: Gary Trent Jr Predictions
I think there will be a market for Gary in the 15-20 range. A team like SA makes sense as they need all the floor spacing possible for Wemby. ORL and DET could also be looking for shooting in the offseason and they have money to spend. It will be interesting to see if Gary takes a short, bet on yourself deal or tries to get term from someone.

I think Trent signing a MLE vs Sign & Trade would be different for us. But do we have enough roster spots to do S&T?

Roster spots is not a concern. Can go way over in the off-season and just waive whoever we don't want before the season. Just need to keep an eye on the cap/tax.

Re: Gary Trent Jr Predictions
The worst ball handling and passing guard probably in NBA history. He can shoot as good as he wants and it wouldn't make up for that. If we have McCain drop to us it would make this decision even easier. It's hard to lose an asset but this guy is a massive negative. Props to him for being a professional but his inability to produce off a bench makes me doubtful he'll ever be a strong contributor to a winning team.

Career negative offensive AND defensive BPM. Let that sink in.

a) BPM is kind of garbage, actual impact stats usually have him about break-even on aggregate.
b) At least half of all players will be negative APM (whatever version you use) players. Probably more like 2/3rds of them usually. A 0 APM player is average (minutes adjusted).
Gary isn't a difference maker. But he's a rotation player, even by BPM (last year aside, where the whole team looked awful because of the late tanking - Gary was one of the less ugly non-core guys in that regard). MLE or a little above is about right (most UFAs get paid more than their value since rookie scale and max contract guys are suppressed in value).

We don't need his 1 sided play. It's time for Gary to go

I agree with this. He seems like the perfect guy teams pivot to after they’ve struck out on better guys. He can shoot 3’s and is ok on defense. Decent placeholder starter. He seems like the perfect overpay for 2 years guy, which means he probably walks.

Re: Gary Trent Jr Predictions
I have no problem bringing him back on a short term contract. The guy is basically automatic from 3 and his defence is not as terrible as this board makes it seem.

Agree with this. Pay him to be the interim starter until Dick is ready but his salary needs to be inline for when he goes to the bench (or we need to trade him). If we had a vet pg off the bench I’d bet Trent looks a lot better in that role. He needs someone to create for him. Maybe with more ball-handling and passing he is tasked less with creating for himself and can focus on finishing. Olynyk could help in that regard. Playing with Precious and Boucher, 2 black holes, is not the type of guys Trent needs to be playing with.
