ESPN Givony: Raptors Draft Grade B+ Plus Winners and Losers

Round 1: Ja'Kobe Walter (No. 19)
Round 2: Jonathan Mogbo (No. 31), Jamal Shead (No. 45 via Sacramento), Ulrich Chomche (No. 57 via Memphis)
I'll admit I'm not totally sure why my projections were quite so high on Walter, who ranked sixth. Getting him at the No. 19 pick is solid value and represents Toronto taking another shot on adding valuable wing shooting after drafting Gradey Dick a year ago.
Mogbo was one of my favorite sleepers in this year's draft. His ability to play up positionally at barely 6-foot-6 barefoot using athleticism and effort is somewhat reminiscent of former Raptors big man Precious Achiuwa. Shead is an experienced college point guard who enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last season at age 21.

Pretty happy with our draft selections and trades done so far. Excited for the summer league.

Stretch defensive C
Barnes
3+D wing
Dick
Walter
That's the dream and why we took Dick and Walter. We don't need a traditional PG with Barnes being the point forward.

After trading away there first round pick to us Indiana some how gets a better draft grade then we did.
Time will tell I guess.
Indiana Pacers: A
Round 2: Johnny Furphy (No. 35 via San Antonio), Tristen Newton (No. 49), Enrique Freeman (No. 50)
Despite not having a first-round pick, the Pacers landed the No. 5 player in my projections when they moved up one spot to stop Furphy's slide into the second round. I get why scouts might not have believed Furphy was a lottery talent as my projections suggested, but to see him not go in the first round was legitimately shocking. If Furphy develops as a shooter with size, he'd fit well alongside Pascal Siakam in the Indiana frontcourt.
Later, the Pacers picked a pair of 23-year-old college veterans who rated well for their age in Newton and Freeman, both of whom have the potential to contribute immediately as late second-rounders.

Long term they are better used as assets to get a superstar big man or elite wing like OG+.
Think something like:
KAT/Chet
Barnes
OG+
Dick
Walter

Literally why?
IQ and RJ are better players than Wiggins.
Wiggins is just a 3+D wing, which you don't trade all-star level players for.

I'll admit I'm not totally sure why my projections were quite so high on Walter, who ranked sixth.
What the **** is this fool talking about? He ranked Walter #6 but doesn't know why, so he's giving us a B+? Sports analysts are **** morons.

It does sound kind of dumb, but he's clearly referring to some kind of statistical projection. He feels it doesn't match with the eye test or his overall perception of Walter.
Sports analysts as a whole are morons, especially as they are steered more towards hot takes for engagement, but Givony is solid. He absolutely knows more about each and every prospect than any of us would even know about one. This is not SAS being put at a desk to say "I have never seen this man before in my life."

We are not trading all star players for wigs. Where did I say that?
Given the front office’s most recent moves, I’m willing to hope for someone better, but I do like wiggins. And he will surprise given the chance.
We still have Bruce brown and Chris Boucher’s expiring deals.

I rate givony’s honesty, but it does make one wonder how he came up with his spreadsheet formulas that rank players.
Of course, there’s more to life than the projections alone - the eye test + work ethic + character etc. Consider me curious as to what’s on his sheet and what’s rated where.
Regardless, in a flat draft we went in. I’m definitely content with that.

I haven't been watching much basketball this season and also thought we'd gonna be quiet during this draft with how weak i've been hearing but boy I was wrong. Getting Ja'Kobe with 19th is nice and FO cooked in the 2nd round!!!

Yo Givony, if you rated a guy 6th, and a team gets them at 19th, that's gotta be way above a B+ grade.
Then tack on one of your "favorite sleepers" getting drafted late...so....How do you arrive at this B+ grade? What kinda arbitrary grading is this?
It's almost like I'm drunk...so here's my bar review. This bar's completely empty. Cute girls everywhere though, and the 'tender just gave me a free scotch. C- grade. You figure it out.

Getting a low grade from these “experts” is usually a good thing. They gave scottie a D grade lol

first of all this grade is by pelton
second he links his projections and how his projections work in the article
his stats based projections list
https://www.espn.com/nba/insider/story/_/id/40394709/nba-draft-2024-pelton-updated-top-30-prospects1 reed sheppard
2 donovan clingan
3 sarr
4 edey
5 furphy
6 jacoby walters
41 Jonathan Mogbo
46 Jamal Shead
https://www.espn.com/nba/insider/story/_/id/16235135/explaining-kevin-pelton-nba-draft-projection-systemits long written article but some points
my projections start with translating what players have done before with what they will do in the NBA for 14 core statistics: 2-point percentage; 3-point percentage; free throw percentage; offensive and defensive rebound percentage; assists; steals and fouls per 100 team plays; blocks per 100 2-point attempts; percentage of individual plays devoted to 2-point, 3-point and free throw attempts; turnovers; and usage rate.
...
this process also adjusts for strength of schedule to put players who faced different levels of competition on a level playing field.
....
Utilizing multiple seasons of data yields better projections than looking solely at the most recent season. In fact, for college players I've found that earlier seasons tend to project NBA performance better than more recent seasons because older prospects no longer have the same experience advantage in the NBA. So the player's most recent season is weighted two times, the season before that (if available) three times, and two seasons before that five times. The weights are opposite for international prospects, who haven't demonstrated the same pattern because they are playing against older opponents.
..
I introduced consensus projections that also include the league's assessment of a prospect's talent
..

Furphy is a great value at 35, but I was glad we didn't take him at 31 because he would get hardly any mins on our team. Indiana is even worse for him. He will get zero mins on Indiana. He is like Gradey but WAY less athletic.
