For the Emirates NBA Cup 2024, all 30 NBA teams will be randomly drawn into groups of five within their conference based on win-loss records from the 2023-24 regular season.
Group Play games in the Emirates NBA Cup will take place on “Cup Nights” across four Tuesdays (Nov. 12, 19 and 26 and Dec. 3) and three Fridays (Nov. 15, 22 and 29), with each team playing one game against each of the four opponents in its group. The single-elimination Knockout Rounds will begin with the Quarterfinals on Tuesday, Dec. 10 and Wednesday, Dec. 11 in NBA team markets, followed by the Semifinals and Championship at T-Mobile Arena for the second year in a row.

I honestly have forgotten this tournament existed
. I don't mind it as those games would be regular season games anyways.
The cup nights are still hard to keep track of, wish there was a better way to do it. Most of the time I don't remember until I see the vibrant court design.

The games this year will have more meaning because everyone understands wtf is going on now lol. Still don't care too much about it but more than I did last year and I assume that will continue to be the trend

They should have just set out a few weeks where all games played count towards the in season tournament at the same time. Easier to follow.

I wanted conferences thrown out for this. Hopefully it happens. Much cooler to be in a group with Mavs and Luka for example.

I agree.
If I remember correctly, last season, we were last team to play our first In-Season Tournament game, while most of the league was on their 3rd game.

Hard to track, most of the courts were horrible to look at for 2-3 hours, and it has no real stakes are my biggest gripes. It needs to have some benefit to the teams instead of just money for the players.

Yeah he definitely misread that, I wish it was just throw all 30 teams into random groups of 5 and see what happens. Conference stuff is boring, it's like worse playoffs lol

The tournament has potential - but its current format IMO is just horrible.
Why is a "mid season" tournament starting 3 weeks into the season?
Why are the "cup" games randomly 2 nights a week for a month while other non-cup games are ongoing?
I like the idea of a mid-season tourney - but this format just honestly sucks. It is confusing, it is to early in the year, and it just does not seem to have any rhyme or reason.

Like if you are randomly picking teams to get three 5-team groups per conference.... why not just use this thing called "divisions" to be the basis as to who you play? Maybe you would build up some rivalry if you have to play your divisonal rivals every year in this?
Divisional Round
4-games (2 home / 2 away vs division rivals --- so for us BKN/NYK/BOS/PHI)
3rd travels to 2nd for a playoff game
winner of 3v2 travels to #1 for the "division champ"
Conference Round
The 3 winners from each conference play a quick 2-game round robin against each other (1 home / 1 away)
Vegas Round
Teams are seeded in each conference based on the # of losses (ties broken by point differential)
Wednesday - 3rd in East plays 2nd in West, 3rd in West plays 2nd in East
Friday - Winner of above games play 1st in each conference (winner of East-3rd/West-2nd would play East-1st)
Sunday - Championship game

They label it in season not mid season but I understand what you are saying
If I was SIlver:
- make this a 30 team random group , no matter records or conferences
- top 16 advance to knockout style tourney based on record within groups
- make this a 2 week event. no other regular games played and none of this back and forth. Just do a hard 2 weeks of this tournament. it loses the hype once u stop.

5 pots of 3 teams, in the east same in west
Teams that finished 1-3 , 4-6, 7-9,10-12,13-15 are in a pot
Then they draw 1 team from each pot and those 5 teams is one group.
Raptors were in the group last year with teams 2, 6, 9(raptors), 10, 13

Pretty sure they take the 3 best records and separate them out into pools. Then the next 3 gets drawn out, then the next 3, so there can't be multiple teams of each "tier" in the same pool.

It was pretty much forgotten as soon as it ended, and playoff races began to heat up, and the trade deadline approached. It's a pretty meaningless exercise.
