I think he’s nuts for doing this but good for him.

He's going to be the richest assistant, just above Jeremy Castleberry.

No way the player's union and other teams are gonna let this slide, there'll be investigations.

Technically Derrick White could have gotten more if he waited for Free Agency as well. There's no rule that says these guys can't extend a year early.

He's making less than OG in AAV to put this in perspective.

Almost have to think there's a wink wink deal with Bridges lined up too.

Rose out here pretty much admitting to cap circumvention. Larry T should take this to court:

Maybe he thought he'd be fine with 156million dollars instead of 269million dollars. I don't think life would be any different. Dude is making 100s of millions with his friends trying to win a chip.

...a new five year, $418M deal in 2029.

Holy hell, the money is starting to get really crazy.

Maybe we should sign GTJ to a 5 year, $30M deal. Lock him in at 6M/yr, while he has no value around the league.

This is awesome. I know the culture of the league is get rich or die trying. But, if I'm in Brunson's shoes and you told me I could have 160 mil and contend or 200 mil and bow out in the first round, I'm taking 160 mil. Nothing in sports has made me happier than winning championships. Some of the happiest moments of my life have been winning championships and are memories I'll cherish forever. I've only ever cried tears of happiness once in my life, and that was at the buzzer when winning a championship.

I'm sure some of you have felt it having children or getting married, but I have yet to reach those milestones, so for me the only time I've really felt that pinnacle of happiness was winning that championship. Brunson took this paycut so OG could stay. Brunson is the best player on that team, and now you're seeing what kind of leader he is. Love OG, but the bag was more important than winning a championship, and because of Brunson he gets to have his cake and eat it too. I really don't think there is anyway OG can live up to the contract he signed, but of course he will be a positive impact player. He's just overpaid, and so is Fred.

Damn. That's an unconventional move. Great news for the knicks.

Can only think of 2 reasons Brunson would do this:

1 He genuinely wants to win
2 The risk of a possible career threatening injury

To be honest....I never could figure out why more players don't make decisions based on 2. I don't know what the risk of a career-threatening injury are (I'm guessing the agents have crunched the numbers) but it's not zero.

Let's say it's 2.5%. But the financial consequences from a purely business perspective are catastrophic.

If I try to put myself in am nba player's shoes...my reasoning might be "take the guaranteed 160 million rather than risking it all for a possible 250 million". Like someone else said above....what are the real lifestyle differences between those numbers? There's a diminishing impact on lifestyle of generational future once you get that high. Yah it approaches twice as much money....but it doesn't have twice as much 'impact'.

And you ARE taking a small risk of losing it all by waiting another season.

He's also the best player on the Knicks. Substantial sponsorship money opportunities and I forgot that he's playing with Hart and Donte who he went to college with and won a championship there. People that are upset about this are insane. Any player has the right to take less, most are just too greedy and too proud to do it, and of course their agents are too greedy as well.

Think about the investment opportunities in stocks and real estate you could do with Brunson's career earnings of over 200 mil.If you just signed 160 mil USD contract, you could buy 10 houses in Toronto tomorrow, and those houses will be double what they're worth now in 10 years, and you could buy 10 more each year for the remainder of this contract. Like you need to cash in when you're dealing with NHL sized contracts, but worrying about shortening your career due to injury when you have 160 mil locked up is actually insane. How many Lambos does a guy need.

Why are billionaires so afraid to sniff the luxury tax? It shouldn't be on the best player (or any player) to take a pay cut for billionaires.
