Vince Carter Jersey Retirement on November 2nd

Congrats Vince There were high-ranking members of the organization who maintained that Kyle Lowry should be the first to receive the honour, having spent nearly a decade with the club, been the face of its most successful era, and led it to a championship.
However, Lowry is about to begin his 19th NBA season; he’s in the back nine of his career, but his retirement is at least a few years off. With Carter’s Hall of Fame induction coinciding with the Raptors’ 30th season, the timing felt right and there was a strong push made on his behalf. It gained steam in May when the Nets announced that they would be retiring Carter’s jersey.
Once the decision was made, the Raptors wanted to find a date early in the season, which would give them a monumental event to help kick off their anniversary celebrations, while also allowing them to beat Brooklyn to the punch. The Oct. 25 game against Lowry’s 76ers was considered.
The Nov. 2 date checked off a few boxes. It’s a Saturday night contest just two weeks and seven games into the season. The opponent, Sacramento, is one of Carter’s former teams and won’t draw too much attention away from the festivities (Toronto hosts James and the Lakers the night before).
It also means that DeMar DeRozan – who signed with the Kings over the summer and will one day have his No. 10 immortalized next to Carter’s No. 15 and Lowry’s No. 7 – will be in attendance for the ceremony.

Ohhh IC. So its not Feb 12, 2025 (though that will probably be another special day for VC). In my STH member pricing, the Saturday, Nov 5 day is Tier 2 price (second most expensive game after the Warriors/Lakers games) so I thought they would do something that day too but wasnt sure.

Good. It's settled now. Carter is our first jersey retirement, and it makes sense.
Lowry needs to be next as he's the GROAT, Period.

Don’t think I really agree with it but sure. Can’t deny the impact.
However - if Vince is retired I feel like Kawhi should be as well.

He made me a basketball fan, and that's pretty special to say. I don't love how it ended, but he was very much apart of the rise in basketball in Canada.

Culturally, he had a very big impact and he will forever be recognized as a Raptor so I don't mind this even if he didn't really accomplish a lot from a winning standpoint on court.

I remember when he chose to retire with the Hawks, because they paid him barely a little bit more than us.

Makes sense. This was the right time and to close the chapter with Vince. Let's be honest he single handedly made basketball relevant in Canada. Without Vince there is no Shai, RJ, Dort, Wiggins etc.

I only started watching basketball after I walked past the living room one winter evening in 2000 and seeing the dunk contest on tv.

Truly an embarrassing day for the Franchise. VC has done great PR over the last few years rehabilitating his image with Raptors fans. Fans that were around know how he forced his way out and gave up on the team that really limited the return the Raptors got. Set the franchise back years. All the hate was well-deserved.
It's also not like the Raptors achieved much during the VC years, he doesn't have the longevity, team success, accolades to deserve it - really cheapens what a 'jersey retirement' is supposed to mean.
