[Siegel] Kelly Olynyk Is A Likely Trade Candidate

Kelly Olynyk, ($12.8M), Robert Williams III ($12.4M), and Jonas Valanciunas ($9.9M) are the three predominant names front office personnel are labeling as the most likely big men around the league to be on the move before the trade deadline, sources said. Olynyk and Valanciunas are two players the Warriors have scouted in the past. Whereas Olynyk and Melton have almost identical contracts, both Williams and Valanciunas own slightly smaller contracts. All three big men could hypothetically be moved in a package for Melton's expiring deal.

Each big also finds themselves in unique situations.

Olynyk, who has yet to play this season due to a back injury, is under contract through the 2025-26 season. His ability to stretch the floor, shoot threes at a respectable rate, and be a secondary facilitator at the top of the arc makes Olynyk a valuable secondary talent. Both Williams and Valanciunas are more traditional, bruiser-like big men that spend most of their time in the paint.

Would be great to trade him and Brown at the deadline.

Boucher has to go with him and Brown. Consolidate them for some of OKCs riches.

So the trade being proposed is Olynyk for Melton's expiring contract? Why would we want to trade away Olynyk just to save money? Does GSW throw in a pick?

It would have to be for a pick otherwise what's the point. If GS is looking good enough to make it a very late 1st, it might make complete sense for them. They were reportedly trying to get Kelly last deadline.

Olynyk for Metlon and the 2026 and 2028 ATL 2nd round picks that GS owns works.

This would clear Olynyk's salary from the 25/26 books. You could then theoretically trade Brown for a protected 1st by eating 25/26 salary off somebody elses books. Is there any team out there that might be desperate to clear salary?

Without a doubt. I'd even throw in Mitchell and take back Payton's expiring if they threw in their Atlanta '26 and '28 2nd rounders. This would reduce their tax bill by bit.

So Kelly, Mitchell for Melton, Payton, GS 2025 1st, Atlanta 2026 2nd, Atlanta 2028 2nd.

This trade in combination with the trades that got us Occhai, Shead and the Portland 2nd would be an excellent series of moves. We could then cut both Payton and Melton and have two extra roster spots to fill with trying out young talent in the back half of the season.

I thought they might be more interested in Agbaji or Brown than Olynyk. Kuminga seems to be their trade bait, who isn't shooting well.

Olynyk was meant to play for Gstate with his passing and shooting as a big. Good compliment to Green.

I wanted Wiggins all off-season because I had a great feeling he'd turn things around, which is exactly what he's done. 0 chance we'd get him for Brown now lol.

This is the reason to make a trade with them. Olynyk and Davion Mitchell for Melton, GPII and 2025 1st pick. That would save them a lot lowering their tax bill.

Make it a 3 way of some combo of expirings (BB, Boucher, Melton and GPII) for another 1st pick.

Don't trade Kelly unless it's a "haul-ish" return.

I think the Raptors like having Kelly O around and won’t be trading him for the hell of it. Teams will have to offer more than their out for the season player and low first round pick.

Before any Olynyk trade, teams have to know that he is still able to contribute.

He looked cooked at the Olympics. Not getting a 1st for that version of Olynyk. He needs to put up like 12/6/3 or higher.

This is not how Masai usually do business and treat the players. I don't buy this

Kelly isn't going anywhere. Future raptors assistant coach after retiring here. Boucher and Brown are the guys at the deadline.

Agreed. Need like 2-3 weeks of Olynyk and Mogbo complimenting each other perfectly off the bench and then move Olynyk.

A deal I would like is Olynyk + PDX 2nd (2025) for GSW lotto protected 2025. Moving up say 10 picks from 34 to 24 (let's assume Portland gets worse/tanks and Golden State cools down just a tad) could be what gets us into range to get a nice center prospect or opens up a trade or even something like #24 and #9 to get up to #7 or #8 if that's on the table. Basically the Thad Young trade in reverse.

A 2nd rounder or 2 is probably more likely. Could see us doing it just to help the tank. Olynyk-Mogbo-Dick-Mitchell looks like a very complimentary bench (shooter/scorer in Dick, defensive guard in Mitchell, a shooting big in Olynyk and an active passing big in Mogbo, just seem like complimentary skillsets with one starter out there with them like Barrett or Barnes) if we assume Agbaji is the 5th starter for defensive purposes once IQ is back.
