Scotto: Jakob Poeltl’s future

During the G League Showcase in Orlando, one of many questions posed by NBA executives was, “What’s Toronto going to do with Jakob Poeltl?”
With the Raptors struggling as one of the league’s worst teams this season, NBA executives have wondered if Toronto would consider selling high on Poeltl amid the best season of his career at 29.
Poeltl, averaging career-highs in points (15.4) and rebounds (10.9), is under contract through the 2025-26 season. Then, he has a $19.5 million player option for the 2026-27 season.
For now, Toronto hasn’t made Poeltl available on the trade market, but it won’t keep executives from keeping tabs on the 7-foot center should that stance change closer to the trade deadline.
From Toronto’s perspective, Poeltl fits with the young core because he doesn’t need the ball to be effective, is a consummate pro who does whatever is asked of him by the coaching staff without any pushback, and his contract is valuable looking ahead.
Should Poeltl remain with Toronto beyond the trade deadline, keep an eye on potential contract extension talks in the summer. At that point, Toronto will know how much it’ll cost to retain Poeltl long-term and how to proceed.

not worth trading. rebuilding or not giving up 130 points a game isn't conducive with development. his value in that regard and by making it easier for barnes, gradey to operate on the floor is worth much more than getting another koloko in the draft.

I'm not opposed to moving on but it has to be an offer that is really hard to say no to and I can't see a team making that kind of offer. If we could get a young big with promise to be a starter and a good 1st, I'd do it. Is someone really going to offer that?

It all depends what you can get, that goes for any player at any time.

Unless there's an offer you can't turn down, you keep him. You don't develop young players by playing without a center

Where I stand to.
Just giving him away to "tank" is foolish. But if you get good value then sure, make a move.
Won't stop some posters like Danger ^^^ from using hindsight in 3 years because we did not trade for [insert undervalued player no one is talking about that gets moved then blows up in 3 seasons].

Moving him in the off season for a 2026 draft would be good.
We are unlikely to offer him a long term contract, and most likely trading him to a team that would offer him a long term contract works well for both sides.
Meanwhile, 2026 is a strong draft with bigs (this year is strong draft with guards), we can finish our rebuild after next year with 3 first round picks (assume Poeltl can get us a 1st).

So we can have a 20% chance of having someone as good as him in 3 years or risk not having any playable C.
Or...re-sign him locking up having a good C for next few years and go try and find a backup who can naturally take over for him when better.

Stop making up narratives. Scottie Barnes developed in his rookie and sophomore year when we didn't a proper Center

Poeltl is about to be an average center by his next contract. His defensive metrics are trending down already

I don't need all 5 starters to be all-star or potential superstars. Jak seems happy with his role...he shows up, does his job and doesn't complain. And he's consistent. He's cool doing his job and letting others shine offensively or on the ball. Every team needs guys like this.
I never have to worry about him. Peace of mind is priceless in this world of overpaid divas whose egos are often the undoing of team chemistry.

Trading him signals you are tanking in 2026 as well. Obviously for the right price you make any deal but I doubt Masai does it. If he's going to hang onto Poeltl then work out am extension. Enough of letting assets walk for nothing.
