Expansion Draft

Hey guys, Just wanted to know if in an expansion draft what 8 players are you protecting? Remember 1 player must be unprotected from the draft and player/team options can also be protected. Thanks guys. Also what would you be willing to give up to protect one of your players from not being selected.

Interesting question.
If I understand the rules correctly, two-way players don't need to be protected, just roster players, so that takes Chomche and Battle out of the running for now.
That said, my 8 would probably be:
Scottie
IQ
Gradey
RJ
Poeltl
Walter
Ochai
Mogbo
Unfortunately, that would leave Shead unprotected, and I'm really not happy about that, but I'm not sure who else to leave off. Maybe it would come down to Mogbo vs Shead? But Mogbo is a more unique type of player that's harder to replace. So as much as I love Shead, that's probably the move I'd make.

There aren’t 8 players on this roster worth protecting

Interesting, you wouldn't use this chance to try and get off of IQ's contract?

Not a chance. Losing IQ for nothing would be terrible asset management. Same thing with RJ or Poeltl.

Why? IQ has a really good contract. It’s flat and quickly goes down to 17%-15% of the cap in its final 3 years given the incoming 10% cap increases. That’s average starter money.
The only bad contract we have is Barrett’s and even that isn’t very bad and we need it for trades.
Scottie
IQ
Barrett
Poeltl
Dick
Walter
Ochai
Shead/Mogbo though doubt anyone picks whoever you leave unprotected

Are people honestly saying IQ is overpayed
32.5million flat..it's going to be 17%/16% of the cap his final 2 years. Deal is going to be a value deal going forward...

Man, people like you should just log off and come back when the teams competing. Provide absolutely nothing to this thread other than fishing for and-1’s.
It’s pretty easy/obvious who it is to get 8 IMO
Scottie
RJ
IQ
Poeltl
Dick
Agbaji
Mogbo
Walter
There’s really not even another player to consider.

Why would we want to?
1) he isn’t overpaid and there’s nothing to get off of
2) if isn’t like we open up 32.5M to use elsewhere anyways

That's how I'd have it too. It'll be a much more interesting decision to make in a few years (assuming Seattle/Vegas get their teams by 27-28) when we have prospects from the next few drafts to consider and Chomche may be a properly rostered player too at that point too.

In an expansion draft, teams often expand the de facto list of protected by making "available" a large salary of an underperforming player or bribing the expansion team with a draft pick to take a stiff off the list rather than a good player.

do you think we'll have any of those on the books in a few years?

That would depend on many factors. With 30 teams, each will lose only one, I suppose, (two expansion teams selecting 15 players each). It also depends on whether the expansion teams get a full salary cap in Year 1 (the Raptors and Grizzlies were given smaller salary caps for three seasons, but with the price of an expansion team today like to come in around $1 billion, they might not penalize expansion teams on the salary cap.)

They did an exercise like this on the Hoop Collective a few months back and I believe Marks was saying it’ll be a 2-year ramp to 90% of the cap floor.

You’d think our team wouldn’t be such a bottom feeder if our Top 8 were all considered valuable enough to protect in an expansion draft lol…
you seriously think an expansion franchise would think “lemme get Mogbo” over some of the other players that could be made available from other teams? Wild that half a season of absolute trash performances still hasn’t convinced you that our roster is generally garbage outside of the top 4-5 guys lol
