[Koreen] RJ Barrett will be extension eligible this summer

That will be a problem, even if the Raptors are not facing many big decisions soon. RJ Barrett will be extension eligible this summer, while coach Darko Rajaković will be entering the final year of his contract next year.

We should be looking to trade him or let the free market decide his value. He's a bench player and shouldn't be in our long term plans. The draft pick this year, if it lands in the top 5 should be replacing him.

Should put up a poll with visible names for each choice. Curious to see what people think about this.

This is not new info. But just because he is eligible, doesn’t mean you need to offer him one. He has 2 years on his contract after this one. You can see how next year goes and then offer him an extension then if he has earned one. This is not a pressing issue in my opinion.

I’d look to lock him in on a low-contact deal around $25 million per season, similar to what we did with DeMar back in the day. I don’t think there’s much of a market for a max deal for him right now, but he’s young and has the potential to develop into an All-Star in a year or two. If that happens, the contract could turn into a real bargain

This forums definition of “bench player” is warped. Barrett is putting up 22/7/6 this season and has started 99.7% of games in his NBA career including those on a relatively competitive Knicks team. He’s in no way a bench player unless your team is stacked as F.

I don't think it is in either partys best inerest to discuss and extension at this point. I mean.......if he wants to re-up on a similar contract, then you have to consider it just to retain a young asset on a good contract.......but I am not sure RJ's camp would be up for that.

Max 140% raise, takes him to about 40ish per year. 125$/3 is his apx max. less than the 25% max salary slot.
I would be happy with 100-110$ for the 3 years.
Let's say $105/3 flat 35$ per will be 20% of cap, then 18.5%, 17%

People are ridiculous and lack a lot of understanding. They keep throwing around 6th man/Demar level like the Raptors have 2019 Kawhi waiting to join the team.

If we get in a position where RJ needs to be traded or become the 6th man because we have someone clearly better to get then we will all know it. Being 10-31 or whatever the hell we are clearly shows we're nowhere near that stage.

Until then, appreciate a 24 year old Sauga kid who loves repping his City/country in a league where most look down upon it. He has shown enough flashes of improving that we should be happy with his production, it's most of the remaining roster that needs to pick up its weight.

Poole is putting up numbers on a terrible team and is about the same age as RJ (a year difference). Numbers on a losing team mean less than nothing.

We shouldn't rush to extend him.

Long term RJ at 30mill per year is depressing

So it's probably happening.

Given current salary landscape, I don't think that's outrageous. Him getting more than Quickley would be head-scratching though and... this FO has tendency to bid against themselves to keep their own players and Barrett being Canadian... don't have good feelings but we'll see. The current team record being what it is, I don't know if I'd want them being further committed to this core as they are. I'm good if they decide to let him hit free agency even if they end up resigning him.

He's still got 2 years left on his contract, no reason to extend him now.
Especially since he'll come off the books the same summer SGA becomes available.

Poole is not RJ. One has the reputation of a cancer and has stupid shot selection. The other improved his efficiency by leaps and bounds since leaving New York.

Should we extend him? No. It’s the same thing I said about Jak. We don’t need to rush anything.

No thanks - I don't care much that he is Canadian. Terrible defender, no jump shot, and momentum killer with his drives into 5 players.

The stats don't tell the whole story...

You have your opinions, I agree with none of them, lets just leave it at that. Thanks for the reply.
