And given the search parameters set out by Rowan Barrett, the long-time general manager of the senior program, it cannot be a long list.

Speculation since Fernández stepped away from February has centred primarily on Raptors assistant coach Jama Mahlalela and former German national team head coach Gordie Herbert, who is now coaching Bayern Munich in the top Germany league.

There are others: Utah Jazz assistant Scott Morrison, current Chinese club head coach and former Raptors assistant Nathaniel Mitchell, ex-Raptors 905 assistant coach and current Atlanta Hawks assistant Ryan Schmidt and associate head coach Shawn Swords with the Long Island Nets.

All but Schmidt are Canadians — the Swaziland-born Mahlalela was raised in Toronto, Herbert is from Penticton, B.C. and is a former Canadian national team player and a 1980 Olympian, Morrison is from P.E.I., and Swords was raised in Ottawa.

Would be nice to get a Canadian who might stick around for more than 1 tourney.

If Jama wants the job, I hope he gets it.

I think Herbert is actually the best choice because of his experience and knowledge of the international game. The only drawback to me is if he is less available locally because of his regular job. Ideally Jama is Herbert's lead assistant and takes over when Herbert is unavailable and perhaps long-term.

I’ve always thought Jama seemed too nice to be a head coach.

Excellent choice. Not as sexy as Jordi but he should at least stick around longer and has the experience

Totally agree with the choice. Canadian coach with gold medal winning international experience. Hopefully Jama is willing to be an assistant.

Did not know he was Germany's coach in 2023, seems like a great choice.

I didn’t think Canada would be able to land Herbert. I figured he was happy leading the German squad. Great hire

What was the story with Gordie and Schroder in a shouting match on the bench, in the last worlds?

I always thought Nurse and then Jordi, being NBA coaches, had a lure for our Canadian NBA players. Hopefully Herbert can still get guys to commit

Great hire! He did an awesome job with that German squad. They're on the right track hiring the guy who knows the international/FIBA game and has delivered on that stage.

This is my biggest concern as well. How familiar are the top Canadian players with him? I get his success in Europe and FIBA, which is all great, but our top guys play in the NBA now. I hope he is able to recruit the top players at the same level as we've recently been getting.

I wonder now, when the team plays qualifiers in fall or winter, will Herbert be able able to coach those teams where our NBA coaches couldn't? Or will he be coaching a club team still?
