The WWE and the NBA

Post#1 » by NinjaBro » Tue May 13, 2025 1:33 am

So back when I was very little and the WWE (known then as WWF) was still real to me, something happened that stole my innocence. The match in question was The Ultimate Warrior vs Papa Shango (later known as the Godfather with the Ho Train). The match went out to the floor and Papa Shango (a Witch Doctor gimmick) then started to gyrate his body and do some incantations as to put a "spell" on the Ultimate Warrior. The Warrior fell to the ground and started convulsing vomiting green goo from his mouth.

As a kid who thought wrestling was real and would argue with friends about it, I knew then that the WWF was scripted and results were predetermined. I thought this was the stupidest thing I've ever seen. My childhood innocence was stolen that night. Tonight is another. :nonono:

Getting older is realizing at the end of the day its all entertainment. Some of these guys really play it to win it all, and others just play to get paid 5 million every month and drop 6 figures at the strip club every night.

I also thought wrestling was real, and I've been on and off wrestling and haven't seen much after the pandemic. Even before that I was on and off, but whenever on I always had a good time. Having been to WWE NXT even in Mississauga I had a really good time watching the wrestlers do their thing. It still brings out the kid in you and I can say professional wrestlers make great entertainers.

I'm not one of those people with their cpap machines on still crying about the attitude/michael jordan era in the two sports.

Even though Doncic lost in the playoffs, the Lakers grabbing every generational talent seems worse than WWE scripting to me.

I have to hand it to Charles Wright, he was a mediocre wrestler but found some really good characters to play, first with the creepy Poppa Shongo, then with the hilariously horny Godfather and his Hoe train. I thought he was done for when he was Kama Mustafa midway through his career, it was such a bland character ..but then he found another life jacket.

Ok now, back to regularly scheduled programming!

The thing is, wrestling doesn't claim it's real. You're supposed to know it's a performance. You're watching a play.

The NBA markets itself as a competitive sport.

Adam Silver = Vinnie Mac  the NBA should really change the name to NBE National Basketball ENTERTAINMENT. Legitimizing this league as fair competition is doing a disservice to fans because it really is predetermined.

Ironically, or maybe not because in this performative industry I don't know what is and isn't anymore, but WWE wrestlers actually put effort into what they do.

Average NBA player has an "Andrew Wiggins" mindset. Show up, get paid, go home. No desire. No determination. Nothing.

You might not be the target audience anymore.
Organization can be defined as an organized body of people with a particular purpose. Not random.

Haha.

They have a really messed up brand of basketball. That's why I have always liked NCAA & Olympic basketball a lot more.

The only reason I started watching the NBA was because were given a local team. Before that, I only watched NCAA.

I love the sport of basketball (youth level, NCAA, FIBA), but have never really liked the NBA.

I agree that the NCAA and FIBA product can be more entertaining, but I also like to watch the world's best athletes competing when I watch a sport.
