Shead should start

Post#1 » by OhCanada » Sat Nov 1, 2025 3:46 am

I'm interested in reading everyones thoughts on this take and how likely it is to happen while both players are healthy. What would the potential pro's and con's be on starting Shead?

This isn't an overreaction to a "poor performance" from Quickley tonight vs Cleveland. I actually think he played good basketball and his defence has been a huge surprise to start this season. Hes playing great. Theres just too many cooks in the kitchen in that starting lineup and for Quickley to have an impact offensively every night, it seems like his role is being minimized compared to his capabilities and not to mention price tag. For the offense work he has to wait for oppurtunities off the ball within the random flow of each game. Id like to see quick be our 6th man of the year, Jamal Crawford, Lou Williams type of player. Come in towards the end of the starters rotation while they are getting tired and takeover the offense throughout the time they rest. Once he steps in its his show.

Jamal Shead has also been playing good ball.Hes a great teammate and hes really thriving in his role off the bench. I think starting him and bringing Quickley in off the bench would allow the team to maximize Quickley's potential and let Shead be the glue guy that Quickley was tonight against the Cavs.

Pro: better defense
Con: wasting $32.5M on an inconsistent bench combo guard.
Organization can be defined as an organized body of people with a particular purpose. Not random.

If it gives us the Knicks version of Quickley I’m all for it.

Are we trying to assemble a starting lineup of players who can’t shoot?

It's weird to me how people will harp on RJ, who has started 392 out of 393 games in his career, being actually a bench player but not Quickley, who started 28 games through 4 seasons before joining the Raptors. Similar to how openly the front office talked about Quickley foremost in the return for OG. They took an upside bet on him and it's not panning out.

I'm not seeing it with him on defense. He's been a part of the lineups getting crushed on that end. Shead is an overrated defender and still looks more impactful there. We heard all training camp that IQ was in the best shape on the team, so I had higher hopes for him than this.

Yup. Shead looked like a poor defender compared to Davion last year. Now comparing him to IQ, he looks all NBA.......and I know Shead is still nowhere near as good as Davion.

it's kinda funny...even last year, i thought Shead and Davion played better with Barnes too

Shead shooting .462 3pt% over 2 attempts per game 17mpg. He's been hooping over the summer and increased his range and consistency.

It's a matter of time Shead steps into the Lowry role

It's unfortunately not going to happen anytime soon - having made the 32.5m bet the FO is going to ride it out.

We need a much larger sample size. He’s been a bad shooter his entire collegiate and pro career.

IQ's putting up 13ppg. He's being wasted in his current role.

You don’t bench a guy who is a career 37% guy cause he is in a shooting slump.

You at minimum, give it more than a half dozen games.

We do gotta get better with rotations though. IQ only getting 11 shots a night is criminal. Between our top 4 guys, we gotta do better at pretty much ensuring 2 are always on the floor.

In a half dozen games the HC might be gone.

yeah, there is no way they put IQ on the bench and make his contract even more untradeable

by any measure except volume stats, shead's been better so far this season. which isn't saying that shead's been amazing, but just showing how bad IQ's been.

their per 100
