Elsewhere in the Eastern Conference, the Toronto Raptors keep coming up in conversations about this year's trade deadline as potential sneaky buyers, a similar position this organization was in a season ago.
Last year, the Raptors unexpectedly made a big addition by trading for Brandon Ingram despite being in a position where they were still rebuilding, and it seems like new GM Bobby Webster and this franchise will once again be aggressive on the trade market.
Although it is known that Toronto would like to move below the tax line this season, this team is also continuing to see what big moves could potentially be available to them, including stars like Anthony Davis and Domantas Sabonis at the top of the list. Sabonis is a very interesting name that keeps being connected to Toronto, with league personnel continuing to question any new information about the Raptors and Sabonis.
It seems like so many conversations since the new year have branched off to Toronto and Sabonis, which can't be a coincidence. Even so, talk of Sabonis in Sacramento remains quiet, with him continuing to try and work his way back from a partial meniscus tear in his left knee.
Perhaps there is more to the constant questions being asked about the Kings and Raptors, especially considering Toronto has two players Sacramento executive Scott Perry drafted when he was with the New York Knicks: Immanuel Quickley and RJ Barrett.
Given their need to find their guard of the future, maybe there is an actual path to the Kings and Raptors coming to terms on what could be the biggest deal of the trade deadline involving Sabonis. And, of course, there is then the possibility of this scenario becoming a multi-team trade.
Just keep in mind that the Raptors haven't been afraid to pull off big, unexpected moves, and they also have held interest in Malik Monk in recent years. A package of Sabonis, Monk, and Ellis for Quickley and Barrett raises an eyebrow. This is not to say that the two teams have discussed such a deal, but it could be a potential framework if these teams get serious.
If, by some chance, the Raptors were to trade Barrett, he would have a very interesting market, given how few wings are available right now. The Toronto native has played well when healthy this year, and he would fit that mold of an athletic scoring wing that many teams are looking for at this year's trade deadline.
The Bucks expressed interest in Barrett last year, and maybe there is a hypothetical scenario where the Raptors add Sabonis, and Barrett gets rerouted to Golden State for Kuminga, whom the Kings still very much want.
This is why the trade deadline this year is so interesting, as there will be multiple trades made involving at least three teams for financial reasons and because many teams are waiting to see who becomes available.

Sabonis makes no sense for this team with Barnes and BI

I’m hoping an IQ/Ochai/Gradey for Sabonis and Carter gets done.

Sabonis is Jak with less defense, but way better offense (shooting, back to the basket game) and rebounding. If you think the raps are amazing with 25 min of Jak, imagine 32 min of Sabonis.

I definitely don't want Kuminga. He sucks.

No need for a 3 team trade, unless we get more assets.
I’d also look to grab Keon Ellis if we could. Trade works if we add Temple or Mogbo and a 2nd.
Eg. Sabonis/Ellis/Carter for IQ/Ochai/Gradey/Mogbo/Lowest 2nd in 2016
Carter as a re-draft candidate.
PG Shead/Carter
SG RJ/Ellis
SF BI/Walter/Battle
PF Scottie/CMB
C Sabonis/Poeltl

I simply don't like Sabonis' game. Having him and Jak on the roster at the same time is also highly unappealing to me.

Pretty sure Jak will be going the other way.

They're completely different players lol. Sabonis is more like a rich man's Mamu.

I was just thinking about this trade on a smaller scale. I'm not really interested in Sabonis, but Monk and Ellis would help fill a couple of needs (reliable bench scoring, ducking the luxury tax).
Quickley + LA 2nd (57) for Monk + Ellis + Saric + SAC 2nd (33) SAC:-Gets the best overall player in the deal.
-Still young (26)
-Locked up for 4 years.
TOR:-Fills 2 needs for 1.
*A reliable bench scorer (Monk)
*A "PG" who can play off the ball, and both shoots and defends (Ellis).
-Drops 6 million immediately from the payroll (26 million vs 32 million)
-An additional 5.4 million in cap space on Saric's expiring.
-A higher 2nd rounder in a strong draft.

This is about the only way I can live with this trade and ZERO picks attached unless it's 2nds.
Ofc Sabonis would likely find a way to be more impactful than IQ but it's still a really odd fit. Especially now that we've drafted CMB who already has some elements of Sabonis' passing & scoring in areas that he likes to operate too but then ofc CMB's defensive impact dwarfs Sabonis, so how are the minutes being managed and what is the point of burying your top 10 pick behind Scottie & Sabonis?! Usually teams don't draft guys in the top 10 of a loaded draft at that, to be a bench player.
The only reason why I partially like it (big part of me doesn't like how this could potentially interfere with CMB's development) is ofc getting off of IQ's money, it's a slight upgrade to the roster but one more key thing is there is a possibility to "rehab" some of Sabonis' perceived value around the league for a potential flip again down the line by having him being viewed as a "winning player". ie/ A lot of people on this very board talked ish on BI and now look. I'm sure if *knock on wood* he stays fairly healthy and can have a nice Playoff run, his stock would be boosted again...if Sabonis helped the Raps make a 2nd rd (or better), I'm sure we should be to actually net some sort of asset vs the dead weight that would've been IQ's contract. Tbt even if we didn't trade him again, I still think Sabonis would have a greater impact on our team's success than that collection we send out (and lowkey benefit clears the way for a lot more deserved minutes for Battle).

Meh. If it’s a single team trade they need a big. They also have enough young bigs though. If they move Sabonis they’re blowing it up, so let’s see where Demar and lavine land as well.

It needs iq’s salary to make happen. Y’all are really underrating Jak, as usual.

Not averse to this. Would like to roll IQ into a better talent first though. Rationale is solid.
