2008 means lets talk raptors draft

I dont want to see Raptors pass up on someone good this year. I know this is pure speculation (via websites) but I think that the raptors have to try and find a way to get a top 5 pick. If you look at the top 5 draft teams for 2008 on nbadraft.net, I think memphis would be the best option to trade with if possible. Somehow we should get a package ready for there 1st pick (maybe invovling calderon or garbo, since gasol would consent to that). Rose, Gordon, Mayo are who the raptors should target. If we are not able to move from our current position (17th) we should try and get roy hibbert. Ive been watching this guy place for the georgetown for a couple of years now... hes SOLID. Even maybe hasheem thabeet for Uconn.
What do you guys think? Even though teams like phoniex, dallas and san antonio do not rely on the draft... Im a big fan of draft picks because at the end of the day all superstars came from drafts. (dirk, stoudamire, duncan). Even though we have bosh as our superstar all I am saying is we should looking into draft day as well as free agency because you never know what surprises there would be. I am not a big fan in just waiting in the summer and using our cap money in signing players.

Gallinari looks like someone B.C will target...I wouldn't mind having him but right now, I'm looking at Brandon Rush, I like his game and I think he will compliment the system really well.

picks are going to be very important this off-season as the raps will go into the 09 off-season with a good deal of cap space.
if my money was anywhere, i'd say BC's going to try and get Gallinari in. i don't see Hibbert dropping like that but you never know.

You think Garbo and Calderon would land you a top 5 pick? even with our pick and Bargs included for a top 5 pick that's tough?
The Raptors are more than likely not going to move up that much in the draft. I could see them moving the pick along with some contracts for an established player on bigger deal who just doesn't fit his team anymore.

I like Brandon Rush too, and he's someone I think will be available by the time we pick as long as his stock doesn't rise.

1. Garbo has negative trade value... simply a filler contract thats short at this point (which is the only good thing). Plus how much value does Calderon really have to Memphis when they have Conley and Lowry already... Calderon would be an upgrade, but would they rather not get a player at a position where they are weak going ahead, then making a slight upgrade where they are strong? No. I don't see how Memphis is a fit at all.
2. We don't really have the pieces to move into a top 5 draft pick, unless AB improves but we decide to still move him.
3. Those teams you listed certainly built through the draft... making wise later picks.
Dallas - Howard + Nowitski was a great pick outside of the top 5.
Phoenix -Lottery picks outside of the top 5 in Stoudamire + Marion, _ + a great late pick in Barbosa.
San Antonio - Parker and Ginobili were late picks i the first round. And Duncan was the #1 pick.
So championship teams have been built through making shrewd late first round picks.... or possibly being somewhat lucky as well.

Maybe if we trade Rasho for an expired contract and a 1 round pick ... We get more chances to get a C like Hibbert and a scorer like Courtney Lee

Thabeet wont be a top 5 will he? more like a top 20. I would go for him. He is a legit defensive centre, a big guy, reminds me of Theo.

All we need is 3rd big and younger versions of Moon and Parker.
With a good drafting GM, something we haven't had since Zeke, we should have no problem filling those spots with mid-to-late firsts.
We're actually very lucky because since we've filled every skill needed to contend except for rebounding and man defense, BC can be very focused in his scouting and drafting.

Yeah, because this so-called soft play on our team is all due to the Europeans. Arguably, one of our thoughest player's is from Europe, Jorge Garbajosa. Even Rasho throws it around a little and everyone remebers that punch on Reggie Evans. Delfino is tough and likes to mix it up.
I guess that eliminates that stereotype.

You hope that while i'm hoping our best talent in the last 20 years or so (Danilo Gallinari) won't be coached by Sam Mitchell...

i'm a big supporter of Thabeet. but i think we all agree that the Raptors need a potential star player to get them into the next echelon of teams in the next 3-4 years. with such solid depth, drafting for maximum potential might be a better strategy than getting a sure-bet NBA rotational player. someone like Tyler Smith, if he is around when the raptors pick, is intriguing for this very reason. he has a very solid, all-around game.

It would be terrific if BC could trade up for a lotto pick, but I doubt that it will happen; we only have three assets that will get us into that range in Jose, Bargs, and Bosh.
Depending on who remains in the draft, a pick around 20 might bring in some talent. Honestly, I wouldn't be adverse to targeting a PG with our 1st rounder, and dealing from a position of strength; this looks to be a deep draft for points if the underclassmen stay in, and one of Collison/Lawson/Augustin might fall depending on the needs of the teams above us.
