Raptors are worst team in the NBA at defending 3-pt line

The Raptors allows other clubs to hit 38 per cent of their three pointers, tying them with four other teams for worst in the NBA in that category. Just for comparison, the Phoenix Suns make 38 per cent of their three-point attempts, and rank fifth in the NBA. Right now the Raptors are turning every team they play into the Phoenix Suns, at least from the three-point line. That kind of defence negates any advantage the Raptors have from the three-point line in a hurry.
Why can't the Raps defend the three? I'd welcome all explanations. But here's one possible theory: The Raptors rely way too much on help defence from their perimeter defenders. This was really evident against Cleveland and in the game against Phoenix at the ACC a while back.
When Lebron or Nash drove, too often, a Carlos Delfino or Jason Kapono would fall off their man trying to help out, and it was all-too-easy for LBJ or Nash to simply kick it out to the open man for the three. The Raptor defenders need to be aware of who they're covering and plan their help defence around those assignments. If you're covering Damon Jones or Rasheed Wallace, sorry, no help from you. If you're covering Devin Brown or Jason Maxiell, go right ahead.

Lack of a true 5 forces more collapsing to the middle than would be wanted, which leaves the perimeter open alot more.

this isn't a new discovery. If, I recall correctly we were also one of the worst at guarding the 3 last year.

No surprise.........As I've always said, this team lacks discipline. Players seem to make their own decisions out there on defense rather than following and sticking to a defensive scheme or plan.

It wouldn't be so bad except that the help defender is always coming from the other teams best 3 point shooter. Can we not have the help coming from their worst shooter??

I'll gladly give up the gimme 2 pointers over 38% (eg. 66.7 FG%) from 3 any day of the week.
It's a strategic mistake to over compensate for your inferior interior defense by shooting yourself in the foot by allowing teams to shoot virtually uncontested 3 pointers at those kind of percentages.

Anytime an opposing player gets close to the middle of the lane or paint, the Raptors panic, and I mean BIG time panic.
I'd much rather have an opposing player try to score in traffic than give up wide open 3s. As weak as the Raptors' interior defense is, at least there's going to be traffic there.
The Raptors are such suckers, and opposing teams know that, so they take full advantage them.

Reminds me a lot of the Jim O'Brien/Dick Harter defense.
And unsurprisingly, they give us almost as bad a 3P%, and they've got some better interior defenders in JO (over Bosh) and Foster (over Bargs).

True to a degree, but we collapse far more than is necessary, even with poor interior defenders. Last year, as noted, we weren't that bad...but this season, there seems to be a conscious effort to put more pressure on the ball-handler, a result of which is that the wings dive to the ball on even a hint of penetration.
