I dont think Babcock was wrong in drafting him.

I watched a bunch of BYU games... Hoffa was exactly what the Raps needed. He was a beast under the glass, a workmans attitude, and could shoot the mid range jumper as a big.

He addressed the Raps need. They had basically all other positions covered.

Although everyone likes to focus on the negative... Hoffa had some decent moments as a Rap... (along with a million terrible ones). My favourite memory is he was playing Alonzo Mourning in the post. They both had back to back possessions on one another. It was an absolute battle. Surprisingly Araujo got a stop on one end and scored on the other.

The guy had no chance in TO.

From square one he was doomed to fail.

His mental toughness obviously was lacking. The fans ripped him apart, boo'ed him, ect. He never could find his niche.

I remember reading papers that were saying at away games, compared to home, he was a completely different guy/player.

It seems as a collective unit... and based on this board alone... we are no better then leafs fans

Hey man, Donnovan McNabb got booed on DRAFT DAY and he turned out pretty well. Dont blame the fans for his lack of playing ability or toughness.

I also wish I knew why there was no reference to Hoffa's overall lack of speed, coordination and his rock-bottom-low basketball IQ... I hate to be a stickler, but these points alone may sum up why he isn't in the NBA.

Not really, Hoffa was an offensive-oriented center (which we didn't need anyways) coming out of BYU and was expected to come in and contribute with very little upside since he was a 24 year old college senior.

Andris Biedrins was the defensive center we needed, not Hoffa.

Having short arms with no vertical is a combination that's doomed to fail. Compare him with someone like Magloire who also has no vertical, but with his long arms, he was able to have a nice career. And if that wasn't enough, he had one of the worst basketball IQ's I've seen.

The guy averaged 10 fouls/48 minutes his first year in the league. His second year he averaged 8.25 fouls/ 48 minutes with 0.366% gf% as a center. Do you honestly think it was the booing that did that? How do you not boo that?

Don't forget that when the Raptors drafted Hoffa he was completing his two year FIBA suspension for testing positive for nandralone (a steroid).

Now that he's off the juice, Hoffa's 20 lbs lighter - but no better.

Ignoring the other points for a second, how could you possibly make the claim that we had all the other positions covered coming off of seasons of 23-59 and 33-49?

We had Vince, we had a young CB4 and we had either a hole or an aging player everywhere else. We had an awful team full of holes.

I won't get to deep into the other major issues like the fact that Hoffa was already 24 (limited upside + the main reason he was a strong college player) and that you never, ever draft for need because... well because stuff like Hoffa happens when you do that.

Also, there was an 18 year-old 7-footer who ranked higher than Hoffa on every pre-draft board that year. And many people, myself included, thought that we were going to pick him. His name was Andris Biedrins. In this case, I think that Babcock wanted the instant 'splash' of a 24 year old rather than waiting for an 18 year old project to develop.

Of course Biedrins was better than Hoffa from day 1... so much for that theory.

I dont think the Raps could afford to go young. They already had their project in Bosh.

Hoffa (as they hoped)... was suppose to bring an inside brute that could do the dirty work. Most good teams of the past have had that big imposing body.

Hindsight... Hoffa never panned out. Which sucks.

I think he would actually throw the ball away but a Raptor would miraculously be in the path of the ball, making it look like a pass.

He's playing in Russia. He sucks.

I backed him, saw his best games as what he would become, but it just didn't happen. He is a big, dumb, unathletic oaf who couldn't use what skills he did have. Didn't help that his PG's were me first chuckers and he played on crap Raptor teams, but still.

If he was really any good he wouldn't be playing in Russia.
