Mitchell did suggest they might send Bargs to a big man's camp this summer, the one run by the legendary Pete Newell, I imagine, so he can learn the intricacies of being an NBA centre.

I just can't believe that the Raptors organization would not fork money for a big man assistant to help Bargnani during the season. There is so much invested in this guy, it's the least they could do.

It's one of the reasons why I love Mark Cuban. He pretty much has a personal assistant for every player. Paying a few hundred grand per year or whatever for a guy to personally coach a player you've invested tens of millions of dollars in, seems like a no brainer to me.

Being so busy with Italy this summer probably didn't help.

MLSE is probably too cheap to pay for any big man coach. They have an obligation to the Teacher's Pension on % return on investment year after year.

What pisses me is the Leafs throw away money to every stiff on the free agent market while the Raps get screwed on their budget.

Maybe it wasn't part of the budget this year. Maybe next year MLSE will give the green light to add one.

I'm just bitter how the leafs are so bad year after year but the MLSE just keeps throwing money at it.

It's simple though. The leafs haul in a hell of a lot more money for MLSE than the Raptors do.

What? The NHL has a hard cap, their salary is lower than the Raptors. If you mean the losing, were you complaining when MLSE tossed money at the Raptors when the Raptors were abysmal? The Leafs bring in a ton of money, they are not a drain in any way.

I'm at a loss to explain why they don't bring in a tutor for him now. Bynum has Kareem working with him on the fundamentals, there's nothing else he does, just working with Bynum. Do you think Phil Jackson and his staff have a load of time to teach the fundamentals to him? He expects Bynum to come to practice and work on the plays with the rest of the team. He doesn't have time to babysit. Practice time is limited as is.

Sending him to Newell's camp is a good idea, and should have been done in the summer of '06.

For the 100000th time English is working with Bargs every day, on all big man skills. He did the same with Dalembert for 4 years in Philly and tranformed Daly a 6-6 guy in College into a 60 million dollar double double machine. Daly himself said that English was the #1 reason for his progress.

English is a hall of famer, the Dalembert experience and Hump progress show that he is qualified as a big man coach, so people should find another excuse for Bargs....

Good point, although I think at some point you're getting diminishing returns from a personal coach on a 12 man team but in cases like Bargnani's, one can't help but feel it would greatly help with his technique and fundamentals, which both appear lacking.

You are right the Leafs bring in a ton more money than the Raptors. I think MLSE have the money to hire an extra coach for the Raptors. This will probably give you more in return that say the money the MLSE is paying Raycroft (BTW I am still not happy about trading away Rask).

Posters in this thread are also forgetting that Mitchell was integral in the growth of Garnett and Bosh. Humphries has really emerged as well. I am confident in our coaches ability to bring out the best in our players.

It makes a lot of sense to dish out 100k for a personal assistant for each player... in the end it only costs you 1.5mill for the entire roster (in the scope of things it is a small price to pay).

What you get is someone that represents the organization interest at all times. This person can also motivates the player, make sure that high risk activities like paragliding or dirt bike ridding are avoided. The person can also monitor diet and progress... and do the needed grunt work to keep the player focused on the fundamental tasks at hand and not the time consuming details.


When you think of the Jay Willams incident and the many after hours incidents - this sort of move will pay for itself many times over preventing one altercation.

I know that during training camp coaches are limited to the number of hours they can work with players. I'm curious if this rule extends to the regular season. Maybe Kareem is not even an employee of the Lakers, to circumvent this rule. He sits in the stands during Laker games, not behind the bench. He could be classified as an employee of Andrew Bynum, a personal trainer. But, I'm only speculating.

I'm glad to finally hear something like this.

I mentioned this in the Bargs' Rebounding Highs thread that his training to date has been a complete joke. Playing for the NT really hurt his development. (Not hating on him playing for his country, but I'm glad they didn't qualify)

For the people thinking that he is being taught fundamentals in practice, I highly doubt that. The NBA doesn't allow enough time for that kind of intensive training during the season. Teams barely have a chance to have decent practices themselves, especially with the cap on how long teams can keep players at practice.

If they do end up doing this, we should see marked improvement from Bargs at this point next season.

Practice time is strictly limited but it is manadatory. If a player wants to put in the extra time, teams keep their coaches around to work with them.

Maybe this will be a good thing for Bargnani...he may even hookup with someone his size while he is there
