OT: To the next poster who wants to trade for J.R. Smith

Post#1 » by dagger » Tue Jan 15, 2008 4:10 am

And there will be one, just as there will be someone who wants to trade for Zach Randolph or Ricky Davis

George Karl adds this to his list of priceless gems to describe J.R. Smith

The Nuggets were cryptically ominous last week in saying oft-injured Nene was out again, this time for serious tests. Also, Chucky Atkins probably is out for the season with hernia surgery, but coach George Karl said he didn't see using J.R. Smith: "That would be a lot of fun, putting your worst turnover man per minute at point guard. That sounds like a fan call-in show."

Plus, he reminds me of Francis. Keep that punk away. He's got skillz but it's the nba. The best "professional league".

Just say no to JR Smith.

Hilarious, but still doesn't top his quotes from the playoffs:

After game four, Karl informed reporters of his plan to bench Smith for all of game 5. Karl said, "He's done," and explained his frustrations over Smith's poor judgment to shoot a three late in the game, "I have no idea what planet that came from." Karl told the Associated Press that he had drawn up the play to give the ball to either Allen Iverson or Carmelo Anthony. Karl did not stop there and continued venting over Smith's poor play, "And then, of course the one with eight seconds to go, from 50 feet, I just love the dignity of the game being insulted right in front of me."

(note: that hunk of text taken from wikipedia, but it's accurate)

You know, I never really liked George Karl, but he kind of just got back into my good books there.

These old school coaches can't develop young players. Sam Mitchell is the right coach for JR Smith.

I'm not sure if it says something about me or about him, but when I saw the thread title, I just kind of assumed he'd killed a hooker.

In JR's defense, he's still young (22) and should still be a senior in college right now so it's not completely out of the question that the lightbulb could go off for the guy at some point. Perhaps unlikely, but certainly no impossible.

Especially considering how many people are still holding out faith that a mistake prone Andrea Bargnani will figure it out in due time.

Reminds me of:

Phil Jackson called Vladimir Radmanovic a "space cadet" on Thursday and wondered aloud to the media as to whether or not Vlad Rad has any idea what is expected of him with the Lakers.

"He could be on Mars. I know it's not on Venus, but he could be on Mars," Jackson said. "He is kind of a free spirit on the floor," Jackson continued. "He's going to touch the ball and shoot it, even though I tell him those aren't usually good shots. He still wants to know if he's hot. If he's not hot, he wants to get hot. If he's not going to get hot, then he wants to shoot so he can get hot."

J.R. Smith wears the word "Youngrich" on his sneakers, "because I'm young and rich," he told the Rocky Mountain News. That's even though he only makes $2.13 million (U.S.) this year on his rookie deal and turned down an offer last month because it wasn't big enough.

Think he thinks about money a lot? They do one of those question-and-answer things on the scoreboard at Nuggets games and Smith was asked, "Love or money?"

"Money," he says. "Because love can hurt you. Money never hurts you." Priorities? Questionable.

why was hakeem called "the dream"??"

Because it rhymes with 'Olajuwon'.

Sure, with the tiny exception that Smith is in his fourth year now and he's as undisciplined as he was as a rookie. Karl is also his third or fourth coach, and not one of them has had much use for Smith. While players develop their basketball skills and awareness at different rates, the issues surrounding Smith seem to deal with character and intelligence. It's not only the on-court stuff - we forget how much off-court stuff he's been involved in that shows little or no judgment.

I'm not sure how you can compare the two situations.

AB struggles stem from learning a new postion and only being in the league for 1.5 years. AB hasn't had any off court or authority issues.

JR Smith is in his 4th year playing a postion he's played his whole life and hasn't changed his game since day 1. He's also a complete punk off the court

Jr Smith...LOL

He's just another desmond mason type of player. Shoots a lot, doesn't mean he's a good shooter.

Yup, JR Smith is terrible. The funny part is that not only is he an immature guy who turns the ball over a lot but he also can't play anything resembling defence.

On that VladRad note, I still can't believe the Lakers didn't take that opportunity last year to terminate his contract.
