Breaking the players???

So now Sam's a physciatrist? ""Cold shoulder for 21 days? You have to break these players?""
Knowing that you can never win an argument regarding a player or a coach in here (50% love him -50% hate him) My own opinion; if Sam truly did say those things is that now he's officialy gone mad.
These aren't children he's playing head games with. You take a young player and try to TEACH him things. Work with him on improving his game. In other words coach him.If if a child misbehaves as the article states about Bargs, you go ahead and punish him (ie: bench him for a game or two, then get him back in. I think he'd learn more about half assed efforts by complete benching rather than sporadic minutes.
Has Joey gotten the cold shoulder too?
What about Kapono (the leagues best shooter last year)? Has the cold shoulder worked with him?
When's the last time your wife gave you the cold shoulder that you meekly hobbled over kissed her on the cheek, apologized and did the dishes?
I'm of the opinion that Sam was misquoted otherwise Sam is an ass.

Smitchell knows best.

Mitchell doesn't treat the players like children, he doesn't coddle them and I love that.

Larry Brown's philosophy is to break down his players, then rebuild them the way he wants them to play. I guess he's an idiot too?

When someone is being uncoachable, sometimes you have to break them by getting on them, sometimes by letting them fail doing it their way, then you get the breakthrough and they start to properly accept coaching.

I don't think he's gone mad or that this is anything bizarre. Shows once again that he seems to know how to get through to players... it just takes different methods and timeframes with different personalities.

No, he's not a psychiatrist.

But there is a tonne of psychology in coaching, way more than many seem to comprehend.

Different people require different tactics.

Let's break this one down a bit, because you seem pretty upset by it.

- AB has been resistant to coaching
- Therefore he isn't listening to Sam
- Sam refuses to speak if AB won't listen
- AB tries to do things his way, and fails miserably
- AB understands that maybe he needs help in order to reach his goals
- AB sucks it up, realizes he can't be so resistant to input and that he might not be the only guy who knows something about basketball
-AB asks others coaches for help on things

Now I can see this going a few ways. 2 are as follows. I can see Sam still being aloof to AB personally, but once he starts to do put the work in, do things the right way and show some results he can praise him indirectly. Or AB can go up to him and say hey coach you were right, can you help me with this?

*** People talk all the time about doing things themselves or on their, but to me that's stupid. A key to be successful is surrounding yourself with successful people and understanding what they do to make themselves successful. Not many people do anything of note solely on their own, at least one person has some sort of input, were used to accomplish some task etc.

Smitch knows what's going on. If Andrea tuned Smitch & his coaching staff out, and only put in a half-effort on training, then Smitch did the right thing to correct the situation. Andrea needed a mental adjustment, and it seems Smitch gave him one.

Quite the little melodrama BC has on his hands isn't it?

last week?

The woman is all postpartum, has an ear infection, and still watches Raps games with me, while putting up with a pretty heavy World of Warcraft addiction. It's not too much for me to throw in an apology once in a while!

Maybe Bargs could learn from me!?

I dig it actually. I think it could be a big turning point with Bargs.

I like that Sam has the guts and the foresight to do it. It means he plays crappy for three weeks, but then maybe it starts to pay off. It takes a certain long-term thinker to do something like that.

i'd have hoped that this has been ongoing for the past three weeks. That would explain the poor play. If Bargs is going to get worse AND get playing time, then that's when the whole team starts to suffer.

You may knock sam for his X's and O's, but he's a top notch motivator and player developer.

The only young guys that he's really not developed all too well were Hoffa (who just sucked) & Joey.

He's made significant progress with everyone else.

Though, getting through to Bargnani is probably the most important task he's had to date.

I trust him when it comes to this.

Haha, no that wasn't me. Although not an entirely impossible situation. If it was Calderon, it would be her getting up to check the internet...

That guy was awesome though, wish i could remember who it was...

You really have to give more credit to Sam. He has more experience in this league than Andrea. Andrea IS A CHILD in the NBA. In order for Sam to succeed, he needs Andrea to be on the same page as him.

I doubt that inserting Andrea back in to the starting line-up was Sam's idea. This is where the whole Management has to support the coach spill comes in. Sam obviously felt that his efforts were being thwarted. Instead of Andrea getting the lesson he probably complained to MG.

It seems to me that now things are on the same page, since this story has come out and the sound bites are out in public. MG recognizes now that Andrea needs to work harder in practice. Sam has won a small victory of sorts when management realized that SIMPLY GIVING ANDREA MINUTES in not going to change things. Andrea needs to work.

On the other hand if you think that players are not children than look at the knicks and how every single player knows more than the coach.

(by the way I realize there is a lot of conjecture in my post and some may not like that... that is ok, I like how my head works - most of the time)

or look at how this whole Noah thing in Chicago has been unfolding; and Noah only told off an assistant coach.

The article about players taking responsibility in the Daily Papers thread is a good read on Sam's whole view on the player-coach relationship.

So players need to be broken before they are suitable teammates?

Sounds like we need a horse whisperer for the Italian Stallion.

Not like Sam had not tried other alternatives prior.....

Sometimes the "tough love" approach works...and esp with people who have always been "the man" at one time or another...sometimes its the only way to get through to them.

cudos to Sam for sticking it out and showing him the err of his ways...
