To Calderon: Defense please!

Post#1 » by Death Knight » Sun Jan 20, 2008 2:15 am

I hope Jose Calderon reads realgm, because I'm calling him out on his defense!

Okay, so he doesn't have the physical tools to defend at all...fine! But what he does have is a brain. Part of defense has to do with the thinking game and the decisions you make to defend.

Here are some of the negative things that Jose does on defense that has nothing to do with physical capabilities and everything to do with the mental aspect of defense and the decisions he makes.

Off The Ball
- Lack of discipline, which causes sagging too far off of his own man and overhelping.
- Lack of focus and turning his back on his man (if you haven't noticed, pay closer attention off the ball........Calderon doesn't see his own man sometimes because he has his backside to him).
- Not seeing his man and the ball at the same time (basic fundamentals).

On The Ball
- Not being aggressive enough to put any pressure on the ball.
- Often then not, Calderon will give his opponent one side and force him to go to it This cause Calderon to be behind on the play and unable to guard anyone.
- Not boxing out on the shooter (a lot of other players are guilty of this though...).

You can add more if you want. But the point is, we know Calderon doesn't have the physical abilities to defend (lateral quicks, etc...), but there are a lot of mental aspects of defense that he can improve on if he had a better understanding of the game of basketball on the defensive end. Watch more videos, have someone lecture him, or just tell him to break some of his bad habbits on defense.

Agreed, he doesn't do too many things badly, but I'm pretty sure Rasho could take him off the dribble.

He might be one of the worst defenders I've seen in my life. He sucks on the ball... he sucks off the ball... he sucks at playing the lanes (compared to other PG's). For all his offensive skills... what good is it if ur letting the other PG break ur defense down and get the same amount of points on the other end. It's really sad to watch to be honest with u.

It seems like every PG in the NBA is faster than him... Andre Miller is actually very slow when compared to other PG's in the league. I've seen Jamal Tinsley abuse him, Rajon friggin Rondo... Devin Harris... etc

but Andre Miller likes to drive to the basket, which it makes it seem like Calderon is a pylon out there because he is getting abused.

we really do need TJ back against faster PGs

rondo and harris are two of the fastest players in the league.

but fast or not, jose's defence is average at best

yes, tj is a better defender than jose. jose is probably a little below average. jose does other things better than tj though. we need both

4th game in 5 nights folks. And Jose averaged about 45 mpg during the previous 3 games.

Other than Moon and guys like Graham and Dixon who don't play much, that looked like a pretty gassed team.

Gutsy 4th quarter effort either way.

Calderon is an embarrassment on defense.
why was hakeem called "the dream"??"

Because it rhymes with 'Olajuwon'.

andre miller and tinsley are both very physical pg, not surprisin that Calderon have problems with them, and rando and harris are like two of the fastest players in the league, not many players can stay in front of them

fatigue probably played a factor, but it's not like before this game Jose was a defensive stopper.

all teams go through 4 games in 5 nights... not saying we can't use this as an excuse, but it's nothing 'special' that should be used as a 'reason'

Toronto got killed in the paint as usual.
