Just a thought: Try Calderon with the 2nd unit

Just a thought here, so don't freak out!

The 2nd unit production has really slowed since the loss of TJ which ultimately meant the loss of Jose. Now guys like Kapono and Delfino struggle to get good looks from Dmart or Dixon, and it has really hurt their production.

What about taking out Jose a few minutes before the end of the 1st quarter, say after 10 minutes. Let Delfino run the point with the starters, just get him to focus on getting Bosh some looks in the post. Delfino will provide better D on their starting PG and another slasher, but he is more then capable of running the point for a few with the starters.

This would allow Jose a few minutes to catch his breath, and then we can send him out with the 2nd unit for lets say 6 minutes. Stamina has never been jose's problem, and I think this system could keep him around 38-40 minutes.

Jose would really help guys like Kapono and dixon (like we saw) get the open looks that they need to knock those jumpers down. Also helps guys like Joey and Hump who like to run the floor and get easy buckets in transition.

Just a thought, what do you think?

I've been advocating Delfino at the point for weeks now. Smitchell doesn't agree with us apparently.

The idea does have some merit, and Sam has shown that he'll do things like this in the past by starting Baston when Rasho was out. It'll only be effective if Delfino and Parker are willing to try to penetrate more often than they do when Jose is on the floor with them. We do need someone to shift the D around, and Delfino lurking in the corner for a three just won't cut it.

I think Smitch tried using Delfino at times to handle the ball and have Dixon play SG, but that wasn't too sucessful, as Delfino is looking to score more than pass. (And his FG% isn't that good to begin with)

I've seen every game for the past 12-15 games, and the only time I've seen Delfino at the point was 4 minutes left in the SAC game.

I really dont see how Delfino could be any worse than Dixon at 1.

Delfino wouldnt' handle every possesion, Dixon will get some time and Delfino would get some time.

Delfino has been responsible for setting up Kapono a fair bit over the last little while. He has a jumper to keep the d honest and he can drive and kick pretty well. If he were to play with the starters, it would be mostly high screen and roll with Bosh and Bargnani. He can definitely handle that.

Calderon is averaging 38 minutes a game... by default that means he is playing alot of minutes with the second unit/

He does play with the 2nd unit but not enough. The key time is in the 2nd quarter when the bench is expected to come in and give the team a lift. I would almost rather start Delfino at point, he can handle opposing PG's better and give jose a few minutes break at the beginning of games. We all know Jose can bring it as a starter or off the bench

Calderon with the second unit would minimize the existing offense we have already with Dixon or Martin running it right now. Take Delfino out then we lose our slasher. Who will score?

Sam has been trying to do that, he has let Calderon play into the second quarter for about two minutes with the second unit, and he then takes Jose out and brings Bosh back in, so I think he wants either Bosh or Jose out there with the second unit.

This makes sense to me, I mean if you pull Caleron earlier in the first quarter, whoever plays the point can basically run half court sets w/ Bosh, as you really don't need Calderon for that, Having Delfino and Kapono out there w/ him allows him to find good shooters out of his double teams.

BUT the only problem could be I'm not sure how effectively Delfino could run the pick and roll with Bosh, and that is a big part of Bosh's game, however I'm sure he could do without it for at least 4 or 5 minutes of game time.

Also, I definately think Delfino could run the point better than Dixon, he has looked good whenever he has gotten the opertunity in the past, I don't know, sometimes the most obviouse solutinos aren't so clear to Mitchell

I doubt he would even agree to come here, and even if he did, would you want a guy like that around a relitively young team??

^A top 5 all time point guard that actually defends? (Magic, Stockton, Oscar... Isaiah?)

Sure.

Moving Delfino to 2nd unit PG should be done. I notice that Dixon and Delfino are usually on the floor together but I'm still confused on why Smitch hasn't embraced that move with the horrible PG play of Martin/Dixon.

But you still have to start Jose. Any other decision would be nothing short of suicide to the 1st unit offense. He's getting 37-41 mpg anyways so it's not like we're searching to replace a lot of minutes here. Just 7-11 minutes of average play is needed.

Better yet, would BC please sign Andre Barrett from the d-league?

And as one of the few guys that can break down a defence a tad, I think CD has a positive impact on Kapwno.

I wish Delfino would at least get a shot at pg duties. Maybe manage the subs so that Delfino would have AP at the 2 to help bring the ball up. Although Dixon was hot Saturday, I would prefer Smitch kept him and his turnovers on the bench.

The thing is, his hot play primarily came while playing SG in the 2nd half. He was horrible during the 1st half playing PG.

Just further evidence that this guy should never play PG.
