You'd think he'd at least make the Canadian national team... where is he right now?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Chiriaev

His high school statistics are unclear, as stats apparently were not kept, but it was estimated that he scored 16 points per game. One source credited him with the lofty stats of 26.8 points per game, 17.3 rebounds and over 9000 assists, though these are likely made up.

You're right. He's not a citizen. He was a landed immigrant who played at St. Thomas Aquinas HS in Oakville. That doesn't qualify to play for the Canadian National team.

Can't find anything on Google written within the last year. I think he is in Russia...which is why nothing English-language has been written about him in ages.

Last time I heard (from somebody that knows him). He was playing in a low-end Russian pro league but pretty much sitting on the bench.

I liked this quote in an attached article

"Assuming the NBA decides to jettison its stars and replace them with Canadian high school players, Chiriaev's future is very bright, indeed"

Feel bad for the kid.. Raps TV had a documentary about him which was similar to the one they made about finding Lebron when he was still in HS.

he was last spotted playing for Dynamo in 2005-2006, or at least on the active roster.

for those who can read Russian:

Расскажите пожалуйста про этого игрока. Говорят, он суперталантлив. Рост 216. НБА по нем плачет Кто еще что расскажет? Каковы его перспективы в Динамо?

Was lebron unspectacular? I heard that with all the hype, scouts went to STA and checked him out only to find he wasn't even close to dominating his opponents. Lots of turnovers among other problems, all against Oakville high school aged chumps.

The ironic thing is he and Bargnani have something in common. 7 foot players that play like guards. The other day I was at my school's gym playing basketball and some people were there talking about him. One guy said he played against him and blocked him pretty badly. They were also laughing about how he was playing SG and he was 7 feet tall. WARNING: THIS IS NOT TO SAY THAT IVAN > BARGNANI.

I checked and found a roster listing for Ivan Chiriev last season on a Dutch team in Amsterdam.

Definitely had a lot to do with what his agent told him at the peak of his hype. When you start believing your own hype, you tend to fall.

I remember Drafexpress at the time did a follow up piece on him after his "The NBA needs" and he pretty much admitted that he went over his head.

I remember he did get accepted to a college but he declined it due to ignorance.

He had a scholarship from Iowa or Iowa St. and he turned em down because he thought he was headed to the NBA :banghead:

Who knows, had he of gone to college, he might have been drafted, or at least if he went undrafted, teamss might've given him tryouts.

Oh well. He believed his own hype.

He needs the NBA now though.
