OT - Magic about Vince: "It's Over"

Post#1 » by NAFTA » Fri Jan 25, 2008 3:42 am

I was shocked. I like Magic Johnson, but I don't find him to be all that outspoken usually.

He just said on TNT, before the Nets and Warriors game:

"It's over for Vince Carter. The knees are gone. He's gone from superstar, to just a regular player"

He also said "Don't even talk about him" when Carters name came up for All Star reserves tonight.

I'm not shocked by what he said, I'm simply shocked that he said it.

Now talking about full potential, Vince never got there.

that's what happens when you give half the effort unless it's a contract year...

I saw it and that was cold.. It was kind of unnecessary too...

The only reason why he would say something like that so openly is because he wants to motivate VC, because he's always been a big fan of his since his Raptor days... It doesn't make sense he all of a sudden starts hating on him on national TV, unless there's a motive behind it...

i dislike vc...but i don't agree with magic...vince still has it just like toronto he's not playing with heart or passion. Vince is playing like the 04 season u could have said at that point he was just a regular player but then he turn it up.

Watch him right now in the GS game.

He doesn't have the quick lateral stop/start and acceleration. It looks like he's just going through the motions (could be the ankle too?).

its over for jason kidd. why don't people like chuck and magic admit it. at least vince can score 20 a night. its a miracle with jason to hit 20.

vince is flat out not trying hard and neither is his team, but he still young enough to score like crazy. jason flat out can't shoot - but if people only want to look through rose coloured glasses and not see jason is a bigger problem.

your starting point guard can't be shooting less than .400. he's shooting like rafer of last year!

i think they should blow it up, because that team doesn't have team chemistry. but i still think vince has the talent to score. maybe not the desire. if he means desire, than i agree, but if he means ability - than thats bull!

Kidds game isnt about Scoring. He still does everything else to help his team win. On the other hand Vinces game is about scoring and when he's not doing that well or efficiently, then obviously theres something wrong.

You have to remember that Kidd is averaging over 10 assists a game, so when you really think about who exactly is getting Carter so many good shots?

Carter on his own can not carry a team, he never could. At least in his younger days Kidd had no problem carrying his teams into the playoffs.

carter is a good assist man and a good rebounder. people are delusional if they think kidd's lack of shooting touch isn't making that team worse.

he shoots them out of games. that team can't win because they rank something like 26 in offense. to me rj can offset vince, but where is the rest of the scoring going to come from. they don't have a bench, and their front line consists of a great blocker and boone who can't hit a free throw to save his life. add jason's horribel shooting to his turnovers and eek.

how is vince done, but not jason kidd? who's shooting under .400, its not vince!

criticize his lack of motivation, but come on, jason is not the guy you want shooting ever!

it's sad about vince. i know we went through some bad times with him here, but i used to love to watch him play. I was at the first game he played as a raptor and a professional all those years ago. There was a lot of joy and raw energy in his game. you couldn't take your eyes off him. i don't really buy the argument that he didn't live up to his potential. he had enormous physical gifts but he was never a great competitor, tough-minded, determined. he was always a little bit of a flake (the guy was a drum major in his school band). he did what he could with what he had. he was never really the same after those knee injuries. i'm glad we had him here in his prime and i hope he gets out of the game before doing serious damage to himself.

I saw the Magic comment as well and was pretty shocked with the frankness of it all. I wanted to catch the beginning of the Nets/GS game just to check him out. What i saw was a player that resembled nothing like the VC of old. He barely penetrated at all. He just passed it off most of the time. However, Magic was right. His knees are shot. He's not hobbling like it's a bad ankle at all. He's moving around like he's walking on eggshells and nails and knows that every move just means more pain. He is moving like an old man out there.

magic's use of the phrase "it's over" had real resonance. i couldn't put my finger on it until now. remember when vince made his first dunk in the slam dunk competition he won? one of the judges -- was it shaq? -- shouted "it's over! it's over". everytime they show the replay of that dunk you hear the voice saying "it's over, it's over." that was probably vince's high point in the NBA.

Magic was extremely talented, but more importantly, always gave the game everything he could. Maybe he dislikes Vince's attitude moreso than he dislikes his game, and that's why he's being so cold
