Calderon for All-Star gaining momentum

Guards: Chauncey Billups (Pistons), Jose Calderon (Raptors)
Billups, again, would have been one of my starters had I actually punched a ballot -- ahead of Dwyane Wade because of the depths of Miami's for-the-ages collapse. Then there's Calderon, who probably deserved at least a starter's mention in the last Weekend Dime. He's been even more efficient than the economical Chauncey. How efficient? The Spaniard, not a bad bargain himself at just $2.5 million a season, has averaged 13.8 points, 9.9 assists and just 1.8 turnovers in his 28 starts while shooting 50.7 percent from the floor, 43.4 percent on 3s and 91.2 percent from the line.

All of which helps explain why Toronto hasn't nose-dived without T.J. Ford and why Raps general manager Bryan Colangelo was moved to thank predecessor Rob Babcock on Chad Ford's weekly podcast for bringing Calderon over. Praise for Babcock, remember, is not exactly Toronto tradition.

Now, Stein is on the bandwagon.

Question: Does Doc Rivers pick the reserves by himself or do the other coaches all have input? Because, if it's only Rivers, then you can forget it, he won't take Calderon over RayRay.

Its good to see Jose get the recognition he deserves. Fans from other teams as well as some Raptor fans will be outraged if he makes the team. I hope he makes the team, if he doesn't he will get some needed rest.

It's all the coaches...including Sam.

I think him making the all-star game would give him some leverage in bargaining a new contract this offseason.

It might be the best for the Raps that he doesn't make the game.

The coaches have to submit their votes by Tuesday and they are not allowed to vote for their own players.

On top of it, the coaches' seven votes are ranked and weighed 1 to 7. The #1 sub gets 7 points, #2 sub gets 6 points, etc.

Stein thinks Butler, Pierce and Billups will get more votes than Bosh? I don't think so, Bosh should be the first name called on every coach's list.

Calderon is looking like the right choice after Billups, what other guard in the East has been better? All the coaches have seen enough of him to know how good he is. I think he gets in. I wonder what Barkley will say when he hears Calderon's name.

Jose basically has no chance of getting in. He deserves it and anybody who says he doesn't can eat turd.

But these coaches won't vote him in.

Exactly how I feel.

The way he is playing he deserves it, but he just doesn't have the name recognition to get voted in by the coaches.

The Raps have never had more than one All-Star at the ASG.

Yes, AD made it in one year when VC was also an All-Star, but it was because AD was just an injury replacement (which is why I always laugh when AD boasts of once being an All-Star).

It is really funny that before the John Hollinger article, no one was even talking about Jose, and now everybody from ESPN, SI, and Chuck and Leo are all making cases for him, which is a really good case. Thanks to John, the Raps will have to pay Jose at the very least 8 mill a year.

We had more than one All-Star in the All Star Game period no questioned asked...... who cares if he was on the injury list.....AD was chosen.

The only thing I agree with you was once AD was at the All-Star Game

Edit: NO personal attacks. Check your PM.

Apparently, the entire ESPN team of writers seems to have a hard-on for Calderon. Even Sheridan included Jose in his AllStar reserves.

Here's the video: http://sports.espn.go.com/broadband/vid ... Id=2459788

Some serious campaigning going on for Jose from people OUTSIDE the raptors organization while the organization really doesn't seem to care.

While the likes of Portland, Golden State and Washington wizards are sending out custome made gifts/toys/mechandise campaigning for their players to be on the reserves list, Raptors' front office doesn't even push for him verbally. Sam says he doesn't care, BC says he wil be happy for Jose, Bosh says he'll be happy but no one has come out taking a hardline approach saying he SHOULD be there. Only AP made a pretty determined status last night saying, "I don't know how can you leave him out, outside Billups and Kidd, he can't think of another guard who has had a bigger impact the Jose."

Honestly I don't mind them not campaigning for their players. The Raps Organization has never done that, even for BC and Bosh. Let their play speak instead of ramming it down our throats. Let other people talk, that generates more buzz. We all know the team believes in him or they wouldn't play him. Let him be talked about elsewhere.

Also, as selfish as this is. Should Jose make the ASG we really are in trouble with his negotiations because a team like Philly will offer him some serious money. Though I don't see him fitting as well here. I honestly believe that Jose has found his basketball soulmate in Toronto.

How do you know what the organization is doing? Do you think BC isn't capable of sending a journalist with whom he is tight - or is owed a favor by - a message on his Blackberry?

And if there is a spot opened up by injury - seriously, Kidd should make up an excuse, or else wear a paper bag on his head - then David Stern gets to make the choice, and do you not see BC sending him an email on his Blackberry?

Chris Bosh should campaign for Jose because guess which of our two point guards finds Bosh more often?

im actually hoping he doesn't.
The price tag would drastically increase to keep him. I'd much rather him get the talk this season, sign him for a good contract, and then make it next year after an established season or two of solid play.

Does it matter? His price will go down during our 1st round exit when our half court set up fails because none of our shots our going in.

When do they announce the all-star reserves anyways?
