From last night's AP game writeup:

Calderon has played extensive minutes as a starter since T.J. Ford suffered a left arm stinger on Dec. 11, and said he can now tell simply by making eye-contact where to give his teammates the ball.

"It's easy to play that way when you just have to look at somebody and you know what he wants," Calderon said.

Anyone have any insight into how Jose does this? Is it somehow that they're so experienced playing together that he can tell from looking at a teammate (and presumably his body language as well) where he's going to go?

This is pretty astonishing to me.

I always knew Jose was inhuman.

it usually starts with the defense playing out of position. For example when he sees Bosh's man out of position and there's an open back door lane he'll make eye contact with Bosh and that's when Bosh makes the cut.

When I play with any smart/experienced players they pick up on your eye-contact and know what you're going to do. Unteachable. It comes from experience not only yourself but with other teammates. Jose just knows what Chris looks like when he sees an alley-oop.

If im playing in the post for example, and the point-guard brings the ball up, if we make eye contact, for some weird reason its almost as if I can let him know I want the ball or not. Even without needing to wave my arms saying "give me the ball", theres a certain way you can look at the pointguard and hell pass you the ball. Its easy in a slow paced highschool or college game but it must be really tough in an NBA game. If you get the signal wrong, its a turn over in a hurry.

Eye Contact is the only way alley-oops get thrown down. Nothing "astonishing" here imo.

Gonna have to agree with the general sentiment, this is a pretty normal skill for PG's and players in general. It's a sign of BB IQ. It's reading your teammates and understanding them. I played PG and after a couple weeks and months, a PG can usually tell how a player is feeling if they want a shot or not.

hahaha some of you guys are pretty funny... i play with guys once a week in a competitive mens league and it's pretty easy to know when someone is looking to go back door, v-cut, l-cut, alley oop, etc. Im sure Jose is more intuitive than any of us are, and is more right than wrong, but at the same time, i think it's a natural rhythm to the game to read your teammates, IMHO.

Essentially what Jose means is that he has played enough with his teammates that they know each others tendencies. If Bosh is in a mismatch and Jose looks at him, CB4 knows where to go and Jose will pass the ball.

It's essentially like having set plays that are based entirely off defensive position rather than signals, or Smitch yelling shat, give me a shat.

It really isn't something special, most really good PGs will have this type of repor with their players. It's the vaunted "chemistry" that you hear tossed about so often.

Something I haven't seen discussed is just how good Jose is from a technical or fundamental standpoint. Never mind whether you like him or TJ - Jose is just about perfectly ambidextrous, can get wherever he wants to go, can make any pass. He is what you would want any young guard to play like, without the And-1 showtimey stuff.
