I havent seen this posted yet about Calderon

But there's a line that differentiates between "good fantasy producer" and "great player," and after really watching him play, Calderon obliterates that line. Calderon is "should be mentioned among the next great point guards in the NBA" good. Calderon is "realistically talked about in same breath as 2005 classmates Chris Paul and Deron Williams" good.

Found this interesting.

So, what makes Calderon so good? First of all, he can get anywhere on the court off the dribble. I watched him absolutely destroy Rajon Rondo off the dribble Wednesday night. Consistently. On pretty much every possession. Rondo is an athletic guard who is reputed to be a solid defender, but Calderon simply went by him at will all night. It got to the point that Calderon didn't even require a pick, he just moved past Rondo and into the lane whenever he wanted to. That penetration ability is key in a great point guard.

It's been said for a while that Ford can get anywhere on the court, and Calderon can't, and needs picks. Also that comparisons to Nash were off base, because Nash penetrates, and Calderon kicks it around the perimiter. The Boston game was one of the first games this year where Calderon didn't play as "safe" it seemed. I remeber Calderon use to get into the lane, but's been a lot safer this season. Looks like Calderon is capible of it like he did against the Celtics. Maybe he's been told by Mitchel to play safer this year?

Thanks! I don't understand why he is always compared to Nash's style of play. Jose's style is much much less up tempo.

Stats wise maybe...

wow a little premature comparing Calderon to Paul and deron who are leading their teams to better records in the West. Nice praise tho

Not taking anything away from Jose because I think he's an extraordinary player but I have a feeling the writer has only watched one Raptor game all season long.

Calderon runs this team amazing, and basketball minds see it.

Its not the fans fault they don't, they just don't know any better. They don't realize what they got.

He's differentiating between fantasy and reality. He's saying Calderon is not just a good fantasy producer, but a great player.

Ain't trying to criticize Jose or anything. Just wanted to say that Rondo is a piss poor and lazy defender. That dude doesn't move his feet and relies too much on his lucky pokes on the ball (yes, even taking account of his recent injury). If he were here in Toronto, Sam would be all over him.

Are you reading the article? That's what he is doing. Whether or not he is bats**t insane is another debate, but he is making the comparison.

Not only is he good, but as I posted on a different thread, I do believe that at present he is the Raps MVP = the player Raps can not afford to miss any game (at least until TJ returns or they get a PG backup).

I realize that CB4 is the franchise guy. However, I do believe that due to lack of PG backup, JC is at present the most important player for the Raps team. This is why BC is looking to get a PG to back him up.

What was missing from the article is no mention of his positive attitude which is contagious. We have noticed a great relationship with the other players, CB4 is especially looking very happy with JC.

It seems to me it would only be plausible in fantasy land. It just so happens that this um, writer, wrote a fantasy article.

Yes but notice his last sentence:

This is great news for Calderon's fantasy owners, and could be good news for the NBA as a whole because the league can always use another great floor general.

He's acknowledging that Calderon puts up the stats, but also adds that he's NOT just a fantasy player. That's the whole point of this article I believe. He starts off stating that he's ranked #3 on their Fantasy rankings, but AFTER watching him "really play", he states that Calderon is one of the next great point guards in the league. The three body paragraphs are all arguments on why he believes this.
