I hope I dont get in trouble for this, but it does relate to the board, and could make for some respectful, honest, and opinionated discussion, bettering the board, and thats what this is all about

Hopefully we view this board as a democracy and the people can be heard, as long as it is respectful.

There have been a LOT of changes around here lately. I experienced it first hand, when I was suddenly suspended for the better part of a week (JUSTIFIABLY SO.. I am not mad about it), but I therefore have had to make some changes myself.

POSITIVES:
I have really liked the crackdown of the use of language, the level of professionalism and respectfulness on the board has reached a new high, the choice of words is much better, and the chair Moderating is all but gone. Well Done!

Also, things that dont relate to raptors/basketball/sports are quickly being weeded out.. and threads based on mere opinions with little substance, the same. Again, applause!

Negatives: (just my view.. open to debate)
I think we are losing a little bit of sight about what this board is about... to talk, debate and have fun. I personally, regarding thread locks, think that there needs to be a little bit of leniency regarding the types of threads people make. If people are being respectful, and there seems to be a high quantity of posts being made, then there is no harm being done to leave the thread open... if there is disrespect, or we are offending ANYONE, it is reasonable to then shut it down. But if the board is enjoying it, as long as it is somewhat relevant to raptors/basketball/sports, why lock it?

Many times I have had the experience of reading a thread, laughing, loving it, getting ready to make my responce, and then suddenly LOCKED. I am so disappointed! Maybe it was because a poster or two took it to a disrespectful level. I dont feel however that because of the few the majority should suffer. Edit their post so know one reads it, PM them, warn them, suspend them, but dont stop a good thread because of one jerk.

I just recently feel some Mods are having a little bit too much of a quick trigger, a power trip, and are not explaing WHY threads are being locked or WHY people are being suspended. More explanation is needed. People should not feel afraid to voice their opinion, as long as it is not disrespectful. Modding should not be about opinion, but about facts of the matter.

OVERALL... I think you guys are doing a great job, and it is a tough job. And we are HEADING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION... I just think that if there are some shared opinions on the board that maybe some tweaks can be made going into the future, then they should be considered. I know I myself re read and triple guess what I am about to say before posting now, worrying I may get slapped on the wrist, I feel like I have parents on this board now. Heck, Im scared to post this thread right now.. I still for some reason feel it will get deleted and locks and I will be suspended this week.

I dont think we need to feel like this is a dictatorship and as often as possible explanations need to be given to those who do something wrong, because this is NEW to all of us and it is tough for especially the veteran posters to break old habits..

Maybe I am alone in this sentiment, but maybe this thread will pave the way for others opinions to be voiced and maybe some shared feelings will be heard.

Overall, this thread is about the improvement of the board, I dont want to see people be discouraged from posting here.

The new mods had to flex their muscle the first few days. A little bit quick on the trigger. But it's all good I don't mind.

Haha, yea, the new mods and rules are cool i guess, the mods are really active ... but the board has definitely lost a some of its entertainment value as of late ... it's almost like how the NBA refs went completely nuts early in the season (this year or last season, i can't remember), calling mad technical fouls before the NBA basically told them to chill out ... MODS, chill on the technical fouls, lol

The board is night and day compared to how it was a month ago. I think the mods are doing an extremely good job and I don't really understand why you guys would think this board is any less entertaining.

Just look at the Make your own Sam thread and you'll realize this place is exactly the same. The rules set forth are for the morons that can't get along, so be civil and you won't even notice what the Mods are doing most of the time.

^^ Yeah, thats it... the entertainment and "fun" of the boards has been lost a little, everyone seems to be speaking too carefully lately and is scared.

But maybe you are right, maybe it will calm down once people understand their limits.

And I understand, they have committed to whoever makes the ultimiate decisions around here, that something needed to be done, so Im sure they are following what the "higher power" told them to do, and since they said they would they have no choice but to now carry that promise out... especially in the beginning of getting their new roles/promotions.

I agree to an extent... but that doesnt explain the MUCH higher volume of LOCKED threads these days... most of the threads are civil and not disrespectful in anyway..... if there was a single post that was not civil, that doesnt warrant the WHOLE discussion being locked.

I am now going to be on the MODs "Most wanted list..." LOL... Im a target.

One other thing I wanted to share is when I got suspended, all I wanted to know was WHY.. WHY WHY WHY.. I NEVER got suspended before, and I couldnt find out WHY, I couldnt log in to read my PM box and I had to wait patiently for 5 days to PM a mod.....

Communication is key.

BY THE WAY IN CASE YOU FORGOT MODS...
OVERALL, I LIKE THE JOB YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN DOING THUS FAR!!!!!!!

actually, if you read that thread, the original post was editted by a mod saying that this post will be allowed. so, policing took place and it actually appears as if it was considered to lock that post.

while being a mod is a thankless job, i think that the mods have been a little too quick in locking topics. they locked a post someone made that was OT and talking about VC trade rumours, they locked my post i made about Herbie Kuhn's gaffe during the Bucks' game...

so i think that the urge to lock should be decreased slightly.

It's always this way when they bring in a new batch of moderators. It's Gestapo rule for a while, then they get bored. The really good ones take longer before they get bored of locking the same old threads by the same old 14-year old posters. In many ways the boards are better during these times; there are cleaner threads and there's less redundancy. But tbh most of the threads that are locked would only really get 1 or 2 posts before they get bumped anyway. The veteran mods probably realize this after a few months and ignore them.

was just locked, no explanation was given.

Quite frankly, they are doing a fantastic job. I've noticed a huge improvement on this board since the new rules have taken place.

This isn't a democracy, you don't get to post what you want. This board is for intelligent, courteous basketball conversation.

I like the new approach, and I've been one of those suspended by the mods recently.

This and any Internet board is not a democracy. If it were, we'd all elect the mods and any post - even serial trolling - would be admissible so long as minimal standards were being observed. Heck, even Oden_Rules would have a vote in naming mods and setting standards.

This is a private community. RealGM is owned by a group of its founders, I believe, and they developed the Terms of Service. If anyone doesn't like how the TOS are being applied, they can PM a mod, or find a board with more liberal standards.
