Babcock plan vs Colangelo plan

Post#1 » by Shak23 » Wed Jan 30, 2008 4:55 am

I liked Babcock's plan for the team. He didn't want to trade Jalen Rose and rebuild the team until the contracts came off. Let's consider what he could possibly have been thinking....

Draft: If we landed the 1st pick under Babcock, lets say we get Brandon Roy who would fill a need for the team considering the only other options we have are Mo Pete and Jalen Rose and Roy considered as the most NBA ready player. The other options would be Gay or Aldridge but with Charlie Villanueva and Bosh in the frontcourt they prefer Roy and even if we don't land the top pick if we got 3rd or 4th pick we should still land one of Gay or Roy. He wouldn't even go near Bargnani after the Hoffa debacle and go for a sure thing instead of a euro project. Plus we have CV and Bosh so we wouldn't go big again.

Also, we would have the 20th pick (whom we traded to the Knicks with Jalen for Antonio Davis and his expiring contract). We have the same head scout right now and we know our head scout liked both Marcus Williams and Rajon Rondo so I think Babcock would want Williams since Calderon could not hit an open jumper his rookie year and didn't predict a breakout season for him. In the actual draft Williams and Rondo went 21st and 22nd so we nad one of them at the 20th pick which ironically Colangelo was trying to do prior to the draft in order to acquire Williams.

2006/07 roster:

PG: Calderon, Williams, Barrett
SG: Roy, Peterson
SF: Rose, Graham, E. Williams
PF: Bosh, Villanueva, Bonner, Sow, Slokar
C: Woods, Araujo

We have a horrible year obviously... Bosh signs longterm because he isn't stupid enough to go into a contract year and risk 40+ million guaranteed that the Raptors are offering and face the risk of a serious injury. In my opinion the roster is very young and promising but bad enough to land a top 2 pick. That would mean we land one of Oden or Durant but lets say we end up with Al Horford.

With a ton of cap room we sign one of the premier free agents in Rashard Lewis and no need to do a sign and trade. Babcock would feel pressure of the fans to sign Mo Peterson so he signs him to the MLE. Also would feel pressure to sign Magloire too a cheap deal and whatever spare parts to fill the roster.

Colangelo shouldn't get much recognition for finding Moon as it was our scouts the same that worked under Babcock so lets say we discover Jamario Moon.

So our roster could have looked something like this right now:

PG: Calderon, Williams, Barrett
SG: Roy, Peterson
SF: Lewis, Graham, Moon
PF: Bosh, Villanueva, Bonner, Sow
C: Magloire, Horford

So in a nutshell, Babcock > Colangelo.

this purely hindsight bias
what makes you think he wouldnt have picked adam morrison?
he picked hoffa as a bust
one of the worst trades in NBA history in the carter deal...it was wrong on so many levels....and it was in our OWN divison
babcock has his time...and he did make some good descions (bosh, calderon)...he made alot more errors
in less than 1.5 yrs...BC has turned this team around....why are people jumping the gun...u dont build a dynasty overnight
