Inspired by Pau Gasol...

After seeing the power of expiring contracts. It dawned on me that we have a host of them next year: Rasho, AP, Garbo and Joey are all free agents at the end of 09 and coupled with a 1st round draft pick can serve as a much better package than Kwame Brown.

But who is an overpriced star that teams would die to unload next year?
I've got a couple of candidates (I've got to run to class and don't have time to elaborate)

1. Shawn Marion
2. Andrei Kirelinko
3. Vince Carter... yes THAT Vince Carter.
4. Michael Redd

Feel free to add on.

none of those guys. How bout Gilbert. (He is quite young compared to those guys). Frankly I do not BC pulling that kind of trade. At least not yet. He is one of those guys that does not like to give First Round Draft picks away....

I think D-Wade will be disgruntled when we get all that cap space. I'm reeeaaallly hoping for the Raps to have D-Wade alongside CB4 by 2010. I wonder if D-Wade, CB4 and Agent Zero can play together....

Tmac is another one. So is Wade as mentioned above. I think once the all star break is over D wade might shut it down for the season. I doubt his value si too low but with Shaq playing even less each year he might even retire next year. They have Ricky Davis and Jason William expiring this year and Shaq in 2 more. If they plan to speed up their rebuilding process a trade of Rasho + Garbo + Joey+ AP + Baston + 2 first rounders for D Wade and Mark Blount would work nicely. This gives the Heat cap space in 2 years after Shaq expirs and allows them to have 5 first rounders of which 3 will be high picks. This can only happen if Wade forces Rileys hand and Shaw looks to retire this offseason. Heat can speed up their process by dumping the extra year of Blunts contract on us and get cap space just in time Rose/Beasly from this draft and ready to contend for the playoffs.

Having a healthy Wade along with what we have now and perhaps throwing the MLE on someone like Kurt thomas shoudl provide enough firepower to contend.

Bargs/KThomas
Bosh/Hump
Moon/Delfino
Wade/Ukic
TJ/Jose

Edit- Flip Kapono to a contendor by next trading deadline for some more vet depth.

They can't win together because all 3 of them need the ball in their hands to be effective. Although Dwade and CB4 are more team oriented players but Agnet Zero isn't. Replace Agent Zero with AK47 and I am convinced that they can win a Championship.

Calderon
Wade
Kapono
Bosh
AK47

Bench:
Humphries
Back up C (FA)
Delfino (Assuming that we sign him next off season)
Parker
Moon
Backup PG (FA)

Also, I am assuming that in order to get Dwade and AK 47, we would have to trade TJ, Bargnani, expiring Rasho, Joey and 2 of our first round picks.

What do you guys think ?

Washington could do without Gilbert and at $20M/yr, they probably will. Washington's better without Gilbert than with.

Dunno which team would want Gilbert and has the assets to trade though. Maybe Indiana or Milwaukee.

I think you've never seen a championship team before.

Gilbert's also been talking about playing for less in the right situation. I'm assuming that situation involves him thinking he can win a championship. If a team can lure him in for a reasonable salary it's a whole different story - kind of like Artest saying he'd play for the MLE in the right situation. I guess we'll see how much they want to win vs getting paid.

I don't know him personally, but for some reason Gilbert strikes me as an ordinary guy with rational thinking; "Okay I've got millions of dollars, I can buy anything I ever wanted, I play video games on a really really big TV, I think I just wanna play basketball on a good team now" I don't think money is the same motivator with him as others.

I thought we had a chance at getting Gasol and am disappointed we did not. I hope BC tried to pull the strings on that trade, and I can't see Gasol being unhappy to come to Toronto. I mean, we could give Boston a run for its money with him.

Imagine if Navarro came over in a trade with Gasol.

Calderon
Navarro
Garbo
Bosh (Not Spanish)
Gasol.

Spanish FIBA World Champs (With some Chocolate Love) in the NBA. FTW!

Kapono, Delfino, Moon on the bench probably. Not bad.

I'd love to make a hard push for Wade (the rest of those names don't really interest me to be honest), but with an early first round pick and the (potential) re-signing of Marion, Miami could turn around pretty quickly.

Assuming they don't I'm offering a package of Rasho, our first round pick from this draft (whomever that may be), next years first rounder (or Roko if they prefer), and Kapono (or Delfino if we bring him back). Depending on the pick this year that could be a pretty good haul.

I'd think about McGrady, but he's so far ahead on the salary scale (i.e. he will make 20 + by that time) that I wouldn't be offering the same type of package.

Realistically we just have to hope for a little luck in the draft (a Monta Ellis/Gil Arenas/Tayshaun Prince/Michael Redd type of late round success.).

I just don't see the likes of Pau Gasol, Ray Allen, Wade etc... coming here.
