Dunking Freethrows

Post#1 » by cdel00 » Wed Feb 6, 2008 5:18 pm

Since watching Moon's Dunk Comp. teaser I was wondering if he could try and dunk his free throws in a game. Now that would be something to see :)

Free throw rules:
http://www.nba.com/analysis/rules_9.htm ... rticleList

a. When a free throw is awarded, an official shall put the ball in play by placing it at the disposal of the free throw shooter. The shooter shall be above the free throw line and within the upper half of the free throw circle. The same procedure shall be followed each time a free throw is administered.

question is could he gain enough momentum in such a short space

EDIT: Whoops there is a section 10 that stipulates
d. The free throw shooter may not cross the plane of the free throw line until the ball touches the basket ring, backboard, or the free throw ends.

I'm pretty sure that your body is not allowed to pass the free throw line...Which is why players don't take jumpshots from the line, in case they pase it.

Buddy you need like 15-20 feet in running room to be able to dunk from the FT line. If Moon could hop that far he should be in the Olympics for Long Jump.

I think they call that a "lane violation"

If I'm not mistaken, the shooter can't go for the rebound till after the ball touches the rim, so unless it was an intentional miss, the rest of the players would have to do a terrible job of boxing out for him to get a chance to even try it. Plus i doubt he could get enough momentum being that close to the rim already.

If they were allowed to pass the line while they couldn't dunk it would still be worthwhile jumping to get closer, as well as rebound.

Tosser can't pass that line until the ball hits the rim, you've probably seen that whistled a few times in the past...

i remember asking chuck about taking jumpshots for FT awhile ago and he said it was easier to not jump or something along those lines.

An idea for his dunk comp. Stand at the free throw line and lob the ball really high hitting the back rim then once it hits run and dunk :)

That has Nate Roninson written all over it. It will take at least 20 attempts get that perfect bounce.

they made that rule because Wilt Chamberlain used to dunk the ball during some of his freethrows.
