A friend sent this to me and we were discussing where we were 8 years ago when this went down. I can't believe that 8 years have gone by, but that is a different story.


I was in Montreal for a university event and a bunch of good friends and I were in our hotel room watching it. it was an amazing time. we were all glued to this **** television in the packed room. we received a complaint call from the hotel saying we were too loud. there were some people in the room who weren't bball fans, but even they got in to it.

Toronto's rep changed that night IMO. This isn't a VC fanboy/hater thread - as that is irrelevant right now, so let's leave that out of it. VC did put on quite a show and the basketball world took note of it... let's see what moon can do this year.

WOW.. 8 years?!?!?!?!?!?!

I was at a friends house for the event, I believe 4 or 5 of us were there.

I was rooting for Vince, my friend hated Vince, and I was truly STUNNED by the dunks he did, the VERY first one, 360 windmill left me shocked for hours....

even my friend had to say Vince's dunks were incredible, but he still hated him as a player... I hate when others are right.

Although the dunk was of high difficulty, the only dunk I was disappointed with was the final one from a foot inside the free throw line, two handed jam.

edit: Even though I cant stand Vince now... I still feel that was the best dunk off ever, even better than the MJ, Dom, Spud Webb days... and it is a memory I will never forget. Francis and Tmac even threw down some sweet ones.

I remember exactly what happened. I was at my Grandma's house that night and started to watch the Dunk Competition. I watched VC's first dunk then had to go home. I missed the second dunk (windmill from behind the board) but made it in time to catch the rest of his dunks. I will never forget that dunk competition...EVER

I was at home watching it with my dad. I was mesmerized. Now when I look back, what made the contest more special was the stiff competition Carter had and yet won it with ease. Truly, the greatest dunk contest performance ever.

At a bar in Kingston with my then current and now ex-GF.

I remember all the guys hovering around a few TV's watching the highlights on the score. One of those times when you're high fiving everyone around you and pretty much staring in disbelief. Man....the hype and hope was so great back then.

I remember the next day going to Shoeless Joe's and watching the All-Star game too. That was back when VC was voted in as a forward and KG kept taking him to school. Wince pretty much had not chance. I should have taken it as an omen.

I felt so sorry for Jerry Stackhouse for having to perform his "human" dunks right after Vince, every time. He looked so bad out there just because Vince kept wowing the crowd (especially since there was so much hype around Vince and the crowd simply showed up for him).

at home sleeping... it's kinda funny, i just thought about that today, cause my parents watched it and told me the next morning what i missed and how excited they were about vince's slams. especially the between the legs was sth they have never seen before.
was really surprised cause my father barely cares about basketball, yet he was caught and excited by that event.
that shows me how special that contest was.

Had kind of an all star festivity party with the cousins.

It was like an out of body experience witnessing that. A top 3 sports moment for me along with Joe Carter HR, and the Leafs playoff run in the early 90s.

was living on rez at the time, watched it with my housemates and others around campus. had just bought a new TV the week before and it put a crimp in my budget, but watching the contest on a screen bigger than 12" made it all worthwhile.

best dunk contest ever....and we had two ponies in the race. TMac put on a great show too. His portfolio could have won it just about any other year IMO. his 3rd place effort was much better than Gerald Green's first place effort last year

How about Larry Hughes LOL. Even the Birdman did better in the dunk contest. I believe LH missed every single dunk attempt (you weren't allowed a gazzallion Nate Robinson makeovers back then...)

I think the two handed FT line dunk doesn't look as appealing as one hander but it is a more difficult FT line dunk (can't stretch out the one arm). I just loved the silence after the elbow dunk...even I was like huh what did he do...what did he just do ?!?

That lil' period from the Nationally televised Phoenix game , Dunk Contest, all-star game was the coming out party for VC & the Raps. The Knicks playoff series win & 76ers playoff series is still my fondest memories of the Raps but that period was really great too.

Magical night. Makes watching whats left of him (tonight) especially depressing.

At Shark City on Eglington getting my freak on with a bunch of ladies. They had it on the TVs there. People stopped and watched in amazement, music still going.

And when Vinny won, the freak-on continued. Word.

Yeah, it is pretty sad watching what he's turned into now. Especially as a middle school kid that was watching him those few years, dude was my idol. I'll never forget the night of that dunk contest.
