Should we take a shot at Artest?

Post#1 » by Kosta » Mon Feb 18, 2008 7:49 pm

I've never been for a player like him, I've always been with the majority who said he wouldn't fit with our team, possibly become a locker room cancer and mess up our chemistry. However, he seems to have settled down a lot more this season, he hasn't really caused any issues with the Kings, he hasn't got into any trouble off the court. And he's still a great player in this league, more importantly a great defensive player on the wing, something we desperately lack. He would be able to contain and shutdown, the Pierce's, Allen's, Hamilton's, and Billups' of the East. A player of his caliber, defensive abilities and toughness could take us to a whole new level in the East.

And it's not like Artest's contract is a burden or anything, he could very well opt out next season if everything doesn't work out well here, plus we wouldn't have to give much more than a few expiring contracts to obtain him.

When this guy has his mind in the right place, he is a force on the court, and could add a whole new dimension to this team.

The Bulls put up with Dennis Rodman, look how that turned out, it's not impossible to win with those kind of players.

I think he's at least worth a shot at this point. And it's not like Colangelo hasn't taken gambles before.

I'd love to Artest on here. We need a hard-nosed, slasher who isn't scared of contact and takes on the challenge of guarding the other team's best players.

Artest's mind is never in the right place and thats the problem with him. So i'll say it for the 25th time we don't need or want Ron Artest.

I'm on board. Not sure BC does it, but I'd be okay with it. Lebron meet Mr. Artest. Let's have a nice clean series. I'd feel better about the next round, I wonder if Kapono would like to go back to Cali?

Defense, rebounding and toughness from a pure 3. I'll take the baggage. He's the guy who is the definition of what we need.

Also, he's that 2nd scorer which we've been crying for. He's the RealGM complainer's dream.

Strictly as a cheap rental, sure. Problem is, I don't know how cheap he would come and it wouldn't be wise to jeopardize our future just to add him for a 2nd or (unlikely) 3rd round playoff run. As for his character issues, I'm sure he could hold it together for 2-3 months. Hopefully he wouldn't be crazy enough to not understand that a strong performance down the stretch has big contract implications for him.
Roy's the best player I've played against outside this guy from my hood in Queensbridge, guy named Mike Chaplain. He went to jail when he was 15 years old. He was the best player I played against, now it's Brandon Roy.

The upside is huge, it would definitely put us near the top and a second round appearance.

Question is, what would you offer the Kings to get Artest?

If he was the last piece to a championship run, I'd almost say yes. But he's not worth it to maybe get us out of the first round. We still don't get enough out of the 2/5 spots to warrant such a big gamble.

I don't want my tax dollars paying for his prison term.

Bosh/Artest combo would be stellar. I would love to have him. If only BC read this thread! However, I think he knows whats he can get anyways. Maybe rasho/dixon/pick/graham?

He's actually a person of strong Jewish faith.

Artest as a bad boy is just an illusion that people seem to plaster on him everywhere. Check out the TNT funny Artest commercial.

Ford/Jose
AP/Delfino or Kapono
Artest/Moon
Bosh/Jorge
Andrea/??

not enough depth tho. We need a centre that can rebound/defend. Perkins?
And a back-up Pf that can play limited minutes so Humph but i would think that he would be in the deal as would kapono or delf.

As a player, he is exactly what we need. He brings everything we're missing from our current lineup (defense, toughness etc.) and would instantly make us a better team. The issue obviously is the fact that's certifiably insane. But I've always been of the believe that you can get by with a crazy player like him, as long as you don't have any other crazies on the team (having Artest and Stephen Jackson on the same time, for instance, was just stupid.)

As long as we don't have to give up any of our core players, I'd be happy with an Artest trade. Worst case scenario is he comes in, does something stupid, and then opts out and leaves after this season. All that would mean is more salary cap room this offseason for resigning Calderon.

Dixon/Delfino would have to be involved, that's two expiring contracts for the Kings right there. Maybe a future pick, I don't know if we'd be willing to give up a 1st for him though.

there is too many reasons why we wouldn't want him

#1 he's got unpredictable personality that can damage our team chemistry on and off the court

Artest would be AMAZING. hes EXACTLY what we need.

who cares about his past. this year hes only has 1 technical foul.

we could use a tough guy like him come playoff time.
