Hollinger: Dixon for Elson would work

Post#1 » by bigjabroni » Tue Feb 19, 2008 9:14 pm

Adam (Dublin, Ireland): Hear the spurs are working hard to dump Elson's contract to get themselves under the tax. Any takers?

SportsNation John Hollinger: (4:04 PM ET ) Not impossible, just from the perspective of making numbers match -- for instance, Juan Dixon would work. In order to avoid the tax, they need to trade him for somebody who makes $64K less, and probably have to throw in cash to pay the difference in pay and a second-rounder.

Sign me up. Elson is a $3 million expiring. Even though we have Rasho to play the same role, another big body with championship experience for this cheap is hard to turn down.
Roy's the best player I've played against outside this guy from my hood in Queensbridge, guy named Mike Chaplain. He went to jail when he was 15 years old. He was the best player I played against, now it's Brandon Roy.

It would be a steal, even though Elson kind of sucks these days...

It's an aiiiight deal. Kind of anti-climactic...not sure what I was expecting anyways.

It's exactly as the title says, isn't it?

I was just about to post this.

I'm not sure if I like this deal. Elson and Baston are pretty similar.

Makes a lot more sense when you think about it. This could be a trade BC would make, gives us an expiring, plus a big, plus veteran experience.

Well, I like Elson's quickness and speed. He's a fairly tough guy with about the same speed as Bargnani. But I haven't seen him play much this year, so maybe his athleticism as regressed.

I'm not a big fan of Elson's, but I do prefer him over Juan Dixon.

Elson isn't amazing, but he's decent and has size. I'm down.

the question is, why would spurs do this deal?
just to get under luxury tax?...
doesn't elson get meaningful minutes right now with the spurs?
would he even see minutes here?

From whom will he take minutes from? Rasho? Hump?

Is he better than Rasho or Humphries though?

Yeah i would do this deal. It's a pretty fair deal in my opinion but i don't think the spurs would trade Elson.

I remember him being talked up when he was with Memphis and was supposedly an under the radar guy

He's a legit C so he'd share mins with Nessy, hopefully he could be a more defensive/blocker type option for Sam to put in the game

does he have a mean streak? can he enforce the paint?

Don't we already have like six guys splitting time at the 4/5?

Bosh
Bargs
Rasho
Hump
Joey
Baston

Anyone think Elson would actually be an improvement over Hump?

And why would we trade away Dixon for a frontcourt player when our backcourt still needs addressing?
