What if Bird cancels JO trade?

Post#1 » by Victorious1 » Mon Jul 7, 2008 12:34 pm

The trade is not official until both sides are satisfied with the physicals/medicals. If Larry Bird and the Pacers are not happy with TJ's medical and discover that JO is much healthier than originally thought, can they CANCEL the trade at this late stage and where would that leave TO.?

Would we have to keep our original 17th pick (Hibbert), and loose Jawai?

Where does that leave us with Jose?

So if Pacer can still back out, does that leave them in the driver's seat?

He would, yes.

In fact, Chicago had a deal lined up for Jermaine O'Neal in 2000 when we picked 4th. We were going to send that pick to Portland for JO and the Blazers asked us to pick Fizer for them. They backed out of the deal and we ended up with Fizer who we had no need for.

Well, if someone fails a physical, it's not really backing out of a trade.

But if that does happen, it mean we keep TJ, Rasho, Baston and Hibbert, and we can work on an another deal, since we have two tradeable assets in TJ and Rasho.

But the deal will go trough.

Would Bird have to PROVE that TJ failed the physical to back out or could he just back out for other reasons or for no reason at all?

If the trade doesn't go through, I'll be heart broken.

He absolutely could pull out of the deal at any time until the 9th, but it would make him look like a giant douche and make it harder for him to deal with other GMS around the league.

I agree it would make him a d'bag.. but why would it make it harder for him to deal with our GM's in the future? The only reason he could back out is because of Ford's BYC. Under normal circumstances, a trade can be completed right away, so other GM's won't have the "due date" to worry about..

The trade was made in principle, so the trade is taken on the respective GMs' "words".

If he pulls out for a bad reason then his reputation will be tainted and GMs may not do these "in principle" trades with him anymore and other teams may negotiate with the teams before Bird gets to at the by-the-books trade deadline.

(I assume)

I'm pretty sure both teams have done the physicals and the deal was made as official as i can be

Do you really think Indy would trade Bayless if it they weren't ?

Bayless was a steal at 11 and they still dealt him.

would you deal with a GM that is knowingly going to cancel a "prearranged" agreement again?

First, physicals are almost certainly completed

Even if TJ "failed", Bird can still OK the deal.

Today is first day that NBA head office is open for business - so maybe it will be official today

As for Morten's story above: Portland backed out of that deal because Indiana offered Dale Davis for O'Neal & the Portland GM preferrred that deal to the one he had agreed upon with Chicago. One big difference was that the Chicago - Portland deal was not in the media but was an agreement only between the teams' GMs.
The gem cannot be polished without friction, nor man perfected without trials.

If Bird did that, no GM in the league would ever trade with him again. You don't pull bull moves like that and get away with it in a league that only has 30 teams.

1) Bird wouldn't cancel the deal after giving up Bayless.
2) If he did it would be better for Toronto as the value of a PG is really high with teams like GSW still looking and I think if the Raptors waited until today they would have got a lot more if they knew Baron Davis is opting out.
3) It won't happen, and the deal should go threw today as BYC for Ford is up.

Bird would be finished as a GM, losing his entire reputation amongst other GM's, agents, players and the press. He would also be stuck with JO for the remainder of his contract or would be forced to trade him for something much less than TJ+17, which would render him Babcockian in status.

-if he cancels it, the pacers are left with travis diener at pg...uh...yeah
-The raptors would be in a good position actully, because they draft somebody (hibbert) is very useful for them, and the raptors would simply throw ford to charlotte for gerald wallace and then have rasho as a trading chip
