Mostly on-topic: over/underrated?

Post#1 » by loserX » Fri Jan 11, 2008 6:12 pm

Saw a thread like this on another board...just wondering what you guys thought. For THIS current season:

1) Which Jazz player do you think is most over-rated?
2) Which Jazz player do you think is most under-rated?
3) Which player in the rest of the league do you think is most over-rated?
3) Which player in the rest of the league do you think is most under-rated?

I'm not necessarily meaning players as "rated" by our board's posters, but in general.

(As always, please keep disagreements civil ;) )

Lets see here...

1) Carlos Boozer is overrated. He is one of the best offensive players in the league, but his defense (or lack thereof) is one of the single biggest reason's for the Jazz's struggles. Paul Millsap comes in a close second and Matt Harpring is third (though I would put him first among national commentators)

2)Andrei Kirilenko is underrated. He seems to have found some semblance of his shot, and the Jazz are much better when he's on the court because of his help defense and passing ability.

3)Dwyane Wade is overrated right now. He's not the same player that he was before the injuries, yet he's still talked about in the same breath as Kobe and LeBron. no way.

4)LaMarcus Aldrige may be the most underrated guy in the league. The kid is a beast. Its scary to think what he'll do once Oden is watching his back.

JDubJazz has a pretty good list, although I'd say Aldridge is more overlooked than underrated (nobody thinks he's bad per se, or worse than he is, they just don't know who he is).

I'd suggest for most underrated non-Jazz player: Corey Maggette. The guy is putting up about 20/6 for a pretty poor Clippers squad. (Of course, he's getting more touches with Brand out, and it's a contract year, but still...pretty darn impressive and getting no credit at all.)

1) Hapring. He plays too much catch up D and fouls hard. I think his rough play is often mistaken for mental and physical toughness on the floor.

2) I'm going to have to say AK as well. He still flies under everyones radar, but puts out on floor. His weak-side D is unmatched in the entire NBA.

4) I've got two: Vince Carter and Stephon Marbury. I've always thought these guys were way overrated. It may be fading for both a bit now, but neither are that good. Vince can dunk, that's it. And I don't have any idea what the hype is or ever was for Marbury. He's a thug, not a player.

5) Caron Butler. Kind of goes unnoticed because of Gilbert and the Wizards aren't all that great, but they would be horrible with out Caron. Consistent guy night in and night out and shoots an incredible percentage for anywhere on the floor.

1. Boozer. Media loves him, analysts love him, fans love him (or hate him if they're from Cleveland). He's the face of our franchise to fans outside of Utah, yet he only dominates one side of the ball....no defense.

2. Deron Williams. Media, sportswriters, and analysts love him. But I feel he gets no ref respect (Nash and Paul shoot tons of FTs) and he gets no fan respect (10th Western Conference PG in All-Star fan voting? Are you serious?) IMO, that makes him very underrated for how good he is.

3.Baron Davis. Shoot first, selfish guard that misses alot of games to suspect injuries. Flops worse than anyone not named Manu Ginboli. Yet the media loves him and so do lots of fans...

4. Someone else mentioned Gerald Wallace. I must agree here. Terrific player.

1) Which Jazz player do you think is most over-rated?
I don't know. I could say D-Will was a bit overrated. Cause he wasn't able to deliver on the road in some close games in the 4th. And he has been turning the ball over too much

2) Which Jazz player do you think is most under-rated?
Memo Okur
Memo has been hated on a lot this year. But we saw the jazz really struggle in December when Okur was injured. We lost a lot of games where no one was able to step up in clutch situation, we really struggled shooting from outside. Yes he is inconsistent shooting but he does stretch floor and he is our guy to go to in close games.

3) Which player in the rest of the league do you think is most over-rated?

Baron Davis. Yes he fills up the stat sheet some games. But he has fair share of horrible shooting nights.

4) Which player in the rest of the league do you think is most under-rated?
Francisco Garcia
Has really shined when given the opportunity. Loved him in college, very skilled. Not noticed because the kings stink

Overall By the Country at Large
1. Overrated - (Does Sloan count?) Probably Booze. Just for his defense though. He is an extremely efficient offense force, but his defense lacks. I was playing NBA Live08 today and during the game Steve Kerr said Boozer "can score and defend" I laughed.
2. Underrated - DWill. Dude didnt make the Top 10 list in voting for West Guards. Wasnt he behind Jerry Stackhouse? Thats just a travesty. =
3. LeagueWideOver - Tracy McGrady - This dude never wins and at times makes his team worse by being on the court, but is a constant All-Star starter and the like. Melo comes in a close second.
4.LeagueWideUnder - Chris Bosh is really, really good and gets no respect. I would trade Booze straight up for Chris Bosh.

Overall by this Board
1. Overrated - (Does Sloan count?) Where to begin ... Jarron Collins. There are people here who think that Fess doesnt deserve all of Collins minutes ... and they are wrong.
2. Underrated - Memo. How soon do people forget what this dude has given this team. His late game play won maybe 10 games that otherwise would have been losses (and have been losses this season). He has had a MAJOR slump, but I believe he can still be the man that I knew and loved.
3. Overrated - Maggette maybe. Everyone thought for a long time that he could come here and be a savior for this team, but frankly I dont think he could fit in with us. Maybe as a backup SF. That would be dope.
4. Underrated - Anyone who plays for the Blazers. A lot of people here think that Portland games should have been automatic this year. They are wrong.
