On the Sloan question, I don't have a yes or no to that. It's funny because I think he has become somewhat of a mascot in his later years. I don't say this to demean or poke fun. He is obviously responsible for the style of ball the Jazz have played for so long now, and it is a quality style. But I do think that he probably sits back in cruise control while his assistant coaches do the heavy lifting. As the players learn the system they also become able to govern themselves. This is something just about any long term coach gets the luxury of doing. This is a sign of coaching genius since he was able to come up with the system and make it so strong. I love that he doesn't beat around the bush, he tells it as it is. He isn't a media darling, but is hard-nosed and consistent (perhaps to a fault).

I would be foolish to just crown Sloan a genius without some question though. Sometimes I watch a game and notice that we aren't adjusting on one end of the floor or the other. I wonder, why isn't Sloan seeing the same thing? Why doesn't he adjust? I also wonder why he will sit a hot player just because of a set rotation that he has. Recent memories include CJ looking good in a game we lost recently (can't remember specific one) and Sloan benches him for a less successful player. I hate that he almost always sticks to his set rotations. It takes a good coach to set up the system so well, but it takes a great coach to be able to adapt according to a game, so I can't say that he is a complete coaching genius. I can honestly say that there are very few coaches I would rather have because his system is fundamentally sound.

The unsteadies genius part ;) may very well be true since he doesn't get the recognition he deserves. But many believe his style of basketball to be very boring, so it isn't very popular with some. You know he must be a very good coach to be successful for so long and with different team makeups.

Verdict - Damn good coach

HotRod is, or course, the Unsobered Genius...

Good coach that has always been and always will be good for 50+ wins and a playoff exit? Absolutely.

Championship coach? Not a chance in hell.
