(Not) Trading our draft picks

Post#1 » by loserX » Mon Jun 2, 2008 7:40 pm

Just a little update on the status of our draft picks (if anyone besides me cares ;) )

The Jazz actually CANNOT trade any of our picks prior to draft day, with limited exceptions. Those exceptions largely apply to getting another pick back.

2008 - we can't trade our pick this year because we might not have a pick in 2009 if our own gets transferred to Philly. We can trade it if we get a different 2008 pick, or UNPROTECTED 2009 pick from another team in return. Otherwise no go. (We can, of course, draft someone and then trade him.)

2009 - already owed to Philly. The next team pick we can trade has to be 2 years after this, so our next available pick for trade is 2011. (There are intricacies here which I won't bother to explain.)

Knicks' pick - there is a chance that this can be transferred to Philadelphia in the next two years if it's low enough. That means we can't trade it to anyone else.

Just in case anyone was wondering :D

I was actually wondering about that, and that is why I was thinking I hadn't heard a ton about the Jazz moving this pick before the draft.

Makes sense.

Man, this is as entangling as the alliances that started WWI.

so (if we don't want the pick) we can only pick a player for another team like we did with Podkolzine/Dallas.

Assuming we don't have enough roster spot for all the three picks, we have to prepare another b-plan: pick a euro player and let him develop overseas.

On a marginal note, this (roster spots situation) can also affect our FA market.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind moving this pick if things don't fall our way.

I really like Joe Alexander, and I think he would be the ideal replacement for Matt. Getting him will likely take a little more ammo than what we have, though.

Hibbert might help us, though he seems like Tag 2.0 in some ways.

Ideally, of all the prospects who we seem to have a real shot at, I would like to get Robin Lopez.

Alexander is going to be a top 10 pick, his athleticism will absolutely wow GM's and coaches and he has the kind of work ethic that teams kill for.

I thought it was interesting that one site compared him to the super athletic Matt Harpring.

He had one of the best pre-draft measurements, second in 3/4 court sprint, second in bench press meaning he is both freakesly strong and super quick down the floor, but he can dunk on anyone and has a decent J.

He should be a really good NBA player.

The problem with your logic is that these rules are all based on trades "prior to draft day". Once draft day comes around a lot of restrictions are lifted.

Besides, what almost all trades occur on draft day anyway. Theories regarding trades before that time are not real useful to discuss.

I actually explicitly said that ;) And that really only applies to the rules regarding the 2008 pick anyway. The encumbrances on the '09 and Knicks' pick still apply.
