And with the 16th pick the Jazz select John Stockton...

Post#1 » by DWillBooz467 » Wed Jul 23, 2008 8:16 pm

I was listening to the amazing Dave Fox today on the radio and he made the comment if Stockton were a rookie right now he didn't think he'd make it in the NBA. I think he's a total idiot in the first place and has no credibility but I was more curious what everyone thought about this topic. and why or why not he would or wouldn't make it.

Stockton was too brilliant and too talented to not make it ANY period of basketball history, including the here and now.

I do understand what he's driving at, however. It's just another symptom of our "I want everything right this second" society. Head coaches get 2-3 years tops, often one and done. If a celebrity does something insane in public, we're frustrated if it's not on YouTube within twenty minutes. On TV, a show has no time to build an audience now; either it storms out of the gate, or it's probably done. And in Hollywood, word of mouth doesn't mean much these days; it's all about how the movie opens.

All of that said, I just can't see how John **** Stockton wouldn't break through any time, any place, regardless of the league's style, culture, or external influences.

He would've had a harder time but with his work ethic I am sure he would've made it.

Dave Fox is full of himself and I can't tell where Fox ends and Alema begins.

Yeah Fox, a PG averaging 20.9 ppg, 7.2 assts, shooting 57% from the floor from in college never would have made it in the NBA or had any interest from an NBA team...

Shut the hell up Dave Fox.

Stockton's first 3 seasons in the NBA are much better than Nash's first 3. Stockton never relied on athleticism to do his thing. His basketball IQ is probably one of the highest of all-time. He would definitely be a top 3 PG in the game today. As a rookie, he was putting up 5 assists per game in 18 minutes, while shooting 47%. The league is more guard oriented today, I don't see how he couldn't have the same numbers or even better ones. I'm pretty sure he would not only make it to the league, but would actually dominate the game.

Gordie Chiesa was on KFAN last night and they were talking about the Jazz's young 7 ftrs. He talked about Ostertag and told a funny story about the Jazz in the playoffs. During a timeout Stockton (who was guarding Terry Porter) came to him during a timeout and said "You have to talk to Ostertag. The next time we get into a high pick and roll on defense, tell him to just get out of my way." He did, and he said Stockton single handedly shut down their pick and roll.

The dude was just a brilliant basketball player.

My favorite part of that interview was when Chiesa said the "Jazz offense is simple, but complex in a positive way".

What?
