Jazz Draft 2009 & 2010
Assuming the Jazz draft either Tyler Hansbourgh or BJ Mullens next week. Also assuming Jazz resign both Memo and Milsap to new long term contracts and who knows maybe even resign the Loozer. They already have Kosta and trying to deveop Fess. Jazz would have enough bigs including AK-47 whom can play PF. How does this effect the Jazz NYK pick? Lets assume Knicks tank it next and get worse record and Jazz get #1 pick in lottery. Believe it or not I think Jazz must pick a point guard (John Wall) and move D-Will to SG. D-Will be upset but John Wall has D-Will type talent. See list beow of potential Jazz 2010 picks.
John Wall PG (Super talent)
Ed Davis PF (Solid but not great and Jazz would have glut of bigs)
Derrick Favors PF (talented but raw and PF)
Dontas Motiejunas PF (the next Dirk N. but lots to learn)
John Wall may be best player to come into league since D-Will and the other guy in New Orleans. How could you pass him up?

Re: Jazz Draft 2009 & 2010
Do we want to try for Wall? What could we get in return for him? Do we think that a player in this draft is better than what we would get in next years? For example, do we like Thabeet or Hill more than Davis or Motiejunas?
Sounds like Favors will be more of a SF in the NBA.

The Knicks have no reason to tank.

Re: Jazz Draft 2009 & 2010
If the Jazz were to get the #1 pick you take Wall and move him to the 2 spot. He's an inch taller then Deron, and having an average back court size of 6'3.5 isn't really that bad at all. He would create insane mismatches in favor of the Jazz. Plus Deron's already shown he can guard the two spot.

On occasion he can guard the 2 spot but there are times he cannot.

I'm hard pressed to find a two that Deron or John Wall couldn't guard in the league.

LOOOOL @ moving DWill to the 2. DWill runs the point better than anyone in the league right now. That's offensive.

Re: Jazz Draft 2009 & 2010
So rumor has it that Mullens is going to Detroit and Hansborough is going to NJ. Those are two names that have been tossed around the Jazz pick. Question is based on those two moves by Detroit and NJ, who falls to us at 20, just as Koufos did last year? I'm guessing we end up with Pitt's Young or we trade the pick. Of course that depends on how Young does in today's workout.

Re: Jazz Draft 2009 & 2010
Young would probably be a nice SG for us. Sounds like he's good at shooting off screens, EXACTLY what he'd be asked to do here and is a terrific defender.
We wouldn't have a lot of 3pt shooters with him and Brewer on the wings though.

Re: Jazz Draft 2009 & 2010
If the Jazz go SF I really hope they look at Casspi along with Young. Casspi has great size, loves to get out in transition and is extremely long. He's a very intriguing prospect, and my guess is if he had played in the US he'd be a lock for a top 15 pick.
I like Young, and you have to like what he did in college and the fact that he has an NBA ready body. What I worry about though is that he had such a solid college career because he was simply bigger, stronger and more athletic then everyone else. I am not sure if he has the actual NBA skills to be a productive player. I don't really want the Jazz to draft a Joey Graham or a Kirk Snyder type player.
Young can shoot the ball alright, but he has a weird release, almost always fades away on his shot and I don't know if he has NBA range. That worries me if we are hoping he can play some minutes next to Ronnie Brewer. You just can't have two non shooters on the floor at the 2-3 position.

I am tired of us picking up wings. We might as well pick a PG in the PG rich draft. We ususally carry three and even if we sign one we will need a cheap third.

It really looks like there is going to be someone to like on the board at #20.

Re: Jazz Draft 2009 & 2010
I believe we will pick up a serviceable back-up at 20, but don't expect to get a future starter unless we really get lucky. Our mid to late first round picks have been nothing to brag about lately, but our second rounders have been a positive.

Re: Jazz Draft 2009 & 2010
I like Brewer but he is a flawed player. He is very athletic, good defender, but for a shooting guard his range is limited. He has improved every year so there is hope that he will continue to improve. I don't think we could have made a better selection when he was drafted.

Re: Jazz Draft 2009 & 2010
By that definition every player is a "flawed player." Ronnie has one big weakness in his game: range. Additionally, he's not the defensive rebounder his size and athleticism suggest he should be, but he has shown some improvement.
In reality, Brewer should probably be playing the 3 a little more. Guarding slighly bigger, slightly slower wings and operating a little closer to the basket both offensively and defensively. If he was paired with another wing that was a dead-eye shooter, it would be a terrific fit. Actually, if CJ ever puts it together, those two will complement one another perfectly. CJ has the stroke to be a 40%+ shooter from distance, and also handles very well and finishes in transition. When Ronnie is playing alongside a guy like AK, who is an airball waiting to happen, then his shortcomings as a jump shooter are left exposed. Show me another team in the last three drafts that has not had a top 10 pick and has ended up with 2 guys as good and/or promising as Ronnie Brewer and Kosta Koufos. I don't think there is one.
As for the OP, is the question whether we should draft Wall if we get the #1 pick? That was such a confusing and mind-numbing post that I am left a little speechless.
In the first place, you don't take a player like Deron Williams and make him switch positions, period. Deron is basically as good as it gets at the PG position. He has reached that level. If you find yourself in a position where the best player available--by a long shot--plays the same position as an elite player on your team, you have to get creative to extract that value. A perfect example of this the Chris Webber draft. Webber was far and away the #1 prospect, and widely considered to be a frachise altering talent. The Magic had just drafted Shaq. Understandably, they couldn't justify wasting either Shaq or Webber's talents by forcing them to co-exist. At the same time, they couldn't just take the next best player on the board, either, and let that value get away from them. Instead, they traded down two spots, got a boatload of picks and spare parts, and took an elite perimeter prospect to team with their already elite big man.
This is what the Jazz would/should do. Wall and D-Will would never be able to co-exist because each requires the ball to be in their hands in order to maximize their abilities. If that circumstance indeed arises--and keep in mind that Wall hasn't earned that status yet, there is still a lot of college/international ball to be played before draft boards are fixed--we would be forced to work with another team in the top 3-5 to arrange a trade down. In that event, we would be able to pretty much target the BPA at whatever slot we ended up at. None of the remaining players on the team would justify us passing on a top young prospect to accomodate them. There is still plenty of time for a prospect like Al Faroq-Aminu to wow the world and make himself a consensus top 3 guy. In that event, we would be crazy to pass on him, even with AK, Ronnie and CJ on board.
All that said, my target right now is, hands down, Derrick Favors. Not sure who mentioned him as "more of a 3" earlier in the thread, but that is poppicock, and probably came from an outdated post on NBADraft.net, from the sounds of it. Favors actually reminds me a lot of Dwight Howard at this point in his development. He is a solid PF who has the ability to be a force both blocking shots and rebounding, and has elite level athleticism to go along with a good work ethic, solid character and a drive to be great. He is also young enough that its possible he could continue to grow (the same thing that Dwight did after turning pro) and even become capable of playing the 5. Compared to him, there is no one close. A lot of things can change, but he is the #1 guy I will be watching this coming season.
