Indiana-Utah trade

Post#1 » by Gremz » Sat Oct 17, 2009 2:48 pm

I also posted this in the "Make you own off season moves" thread, but wasn't aware you guys allow separate threads for trades. Hopefully it gets more feedback here:

Trade ID #5256635

Probably more of a deadline deal, but I think it could have potential. Not sure is Harpring will be retiring (remember reading something about it with no confirmation), I apologize if that is the case.

Indiana trades: Jeff Foster

Utah trades: Matt Harpring + the rights to swap the NYK 1st with the IND 1st.

Why for Indy: It's quite probable that both picks are lottery material, but Indy gives up the valued service in Foster for a chance to move up in the lottery and save some future salary too.

Why for Utah: The get a very underrated role player who adds quality rebounding and man defense to the second unit. Could give the Jazz the chance at a deeper playoff run, while only giving up the possibility of a higher pick.

Nah, I'd rather give those minutes to Koufos, keep Harpring to let his contract expire and see where that pick is going to end up. I like Foster but I don't think he's worth that much right now.
On a sidenote, in a deal with the Pacers I'd really like to get Lorbek's rights.

No, a top 4 pick is not worth Foster.

Not a chance. Maybe the rights to swap second round draft picks but even then you have the Jazz taking on an additional year of salary for a mediocre player going into the best offseason in a long time.

And Indiana gets a very valuable expiring which they won't have to pay a cent of because insurance will cover his entire salary.

Yeah, when it becomes John Wall we will consider Granger and your pick.

This is a well meant pile of ****. Do you realize how much the value of even ONE draft slot is at the top of the draft? This isn't like moving from 14 to 17. Let's say NY ends up with the 4th pick and tIndy ends up with the eighth. This decade that is going from:

02: Good to Chris Wilcox
03: Bosh to TJ Ford
04: Livingston to Rafael Araujo
05: Chris Paul to Channing Frye
06: Tyrus Thomas to Rudy Gay
07: Conley to Brandan Wright
08: Westbrook to Joe Alexander
09: Harden to Hill

As you can see, even in the best of years you're probably going to take a worse player, and you run the risk of trading away a chance at a true stud by making this move. For what? Foster is a nice little peice, but he aint worth that risk.

I understand the logic, and your concern. I thought Foster might actually be worthwhile for you guys, no matter.

There is a risk of the pick swap, but to think that Indy will definitely be better than NY is a bit out there. We're by no means a 40 win team. Neither are they, but I expect similar finishes this season. It was more a forethought for us to be able to move from say #8 to #6.
