Re: Jazz Options for upcoming season
Whatever we do I don't want to trade the pick. Championship teams are usually built via draft, not Toledo trades.

Do people not realize getting Wade or Bosh is NOT a legitimate possibility for Utah?

Re: Jazz Options for upcoming season
Is Memo an expiring contract a la AK? If not then he has absolutely no trade value until he comes back from injury and shows that he can at least be serviceable.

Memo expires the year after AK.

There's no reason to dump Kirilenko. He's a good player and his contract now is a good one. The 9 and the Memphis pick, and our next years one for the 3 would be like the one that nabbed us D-Will.

Why in the world would Toronto take on Kirilenko's contract? They can get future first round picks from other teams in a sign and trade for Bosh without taking on any additional salary - certainly not bad contracts.

Re: Jazz Options for upcoming season
I posted this on another forum. I think this information is completely relevant.
Basically without Boozer or Korver we are at 58.2 Mil next year. Fess and Matthews have cap holds of about 1 mil each---if we offer the tender they will be RFA's. Or we can just wave them. Luxury Tax Level is expected to be at 68. So we have 10 mil to play with. We also potentially have 2 to 4 roster spots we must fill.
My 2 cents-
We have to let Boozer go. We are not a champ with him So there is no reason to be luxury tax payers again.
We probably will be able to resign Wesley to about 3 mil a year. That would put us at about 60 mil total salary. So with that 8 Mil minus what are draft pick will make we need to fill 2 roster spots. High draft picks make a significant chunk of change 2-5 mil a year.
So we could afford a Korver contract of about 3 mil a year or let him walk and try to get someone near MLE money.
Of course trades could change this whole scenario.

Undercontract(Salary Cap Number):
1 Deron(14.9 Mil)
2 Price(1.4 Mil)
3 Miles(3.7 Mil)
4 Koufos(1.3 Mil)
5 Memo (9.95 Mil)
6 Millsap(7.6 Mil)
7 AK(17.8 Mil)
Non guaranteed contracts:
8 Jeffers(.75 Mil)
9 Gaines(.75 Mil)
Qualifying offers--if made then player will be restricted:
10 Matthews (.94 MIl)
11 Fess(1.1 Mil)
It all adds up 58.2 Mil.

Re: Jazz Options for upcoming season
People, why would we want to ship AK away for nothing after paying him max money for six years?! Now is the time to reap the rewards of that patience by either 1) re-signing him to a bargain contract after the upcoming season, or 2) trading him at the deadline for truly beneficial long term assets. My preference is option 1 because he possesses in spades all of the attributes the Jazz sadly lack: length, athleticism, defense, shot blocking, play-making and cool hair.
Regarding Boozer - if the Jazz allow him to walk away without receiving decent value in return, they will not be in position to contend until they suck enough to get a top three pick. They simply do not have the abundance of talent to absorb that kind of hit with out serious adverse consequences. Not having to pay his salary equates to a commensurate loss of competitive ability. As fans, is that not our primary concern?
It seems there are segments of the Jazz's fandom which overly sympathize with ownership. The Jazz have been a financial juggernaut for the Millers. Yes, management should be commended for running a model franchise all these years, but a time comes when it is necessary to put something on the line in order to compete. Larry took huge risks in the early days, and the payoff for fans is the opportunity to watch a successful NBA team in SLC. The payoff for ownership is a consistently profitable enterprise, the huge equity windfall which has been amassed over the years and the prestige of membership in a very exclusive group- which adds significant value to all their other business ventures. At this juncture, the Jazz are in position to build a truly contending team simply by retaining players and utilizing assets they already have.
The best teams have the best players- period. In putting numbers first, the Jazz are suppose to compete with, what- Matthews, CJ, Millsap and some green rookie center starting alongside Williams? Price being our sixth man, with the remainder of the bench being filled out by Korver and D league scrubs? Yeah, our salary cap numbers would be rosy, but when the the arena is filled with empty people and revenue tanks along with our record, that is precisely the financial formula which is not sustainable.
Alternatively, pony up and pay Boozer what he is worth, re-sign Matthews, let Korver and one of Kofous/Fez go, fill the 5 spot need through the draft, trade Millsap for a defensive minded, play-making combo guard, re-sign AK after the season, and dump Okur asap. That would be a team which could actually compete for preeminence in the Western Conference for several seasons. All it would take is one season of biting the bullet.
And ya know what? Ownership can afford it.

Re: Jazz Options for upcoming season

Just because you want Millsap starting because you have him on a keeper fantasy team doesn't mean that will happen...

"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

Only problem is Boozer always thinks he worth more then he actually is. And with the amount of teams with lots of salary to waste he will get it. So their is no way we are keeping Boozer. You either need to go all in after some forces or ride Millsap and grow rookies. Either way you are sending a message to your Allstar PG in which way the team is going. Does he want to wait for us to build a team?

How do you propose signing Joe Johnson?
total salary: 80 M$
Only $10-15M into the tax and there's still a huge logjam of wing players and still no real backup PG.
This is a fantastic plan.

Re: Jazz Options for upcoming season
The only possible way for the Jazz to get Joe Johnson is if he is willing to take the mid-level exception ($5.something million). And we all know that isn't happening.
