Use the Harpring TPE (as long as the jazz weren't going to use it on Gortat) and get Pietrus. Why does Orlando do this? They want to match the contract that Reddick got of 4yrs/$20M from Chicago, and this free's up the money to do so, so that they don't have to go too far above the cap. Pietrus bings athleticism, defense, and shooting. He is more experienced, taller, longer, and more athletic than Wes. He also only has two years left at $5M per on his contract and hopefully by then Hayward will be ready to take over. In this scenario we also retain our MLE.
By the way, after the big FA's all signed Chad Ford did a list of the top 15 remaining FA's (check it out on insider), and Korver was 15th, Wesley Matthews didn't even make the list of 15, let alone his "Other Notable" section that had the people listed from 16-30. Now, I think he just forgot Matthews but I think Wes is a good, not great backup. Don't give him full MLE. He is worth $3.5-$4M per season like CJ, but once you go near $5M he really starts to have diminishing value compared to the cap. Remember: The smart wing signing so far have been: Korver at 3/$15M, Reddick got 4/$20M, Morrow got 3/$12.
I am just surprised at how much Portland likes Matthews. He is just not worth much more than $4M.
This whole offseason has been insane. I say wait until next year to spend money and the MLE. When players like Tyrus Thomas are getting $40M, Outlaw $32, and all the other insane deals it is best to skip this market. When Guys who are worth $3-$5M per start getting $7M you have to really wonder if the teams that sit this out will end up winning in the long run. Under the future CBA these kind of contracts for back up players will be toxic.
Congratulations Wes, but have fun being a backup. I would really love for the Jazz to, for the first time stick a Rookie out there and tell him to figure it out. We aren't winning a championship this year so give Hayward 35 minutes a game and let him get through 3 years worth of learning curve in one year.

Re: Go After Pietrus
Pietrus isn't much better than Mathews and there is no room for improvement. I will be saying it over and over until the offseason is through, but our target should be Tony Allen.

He is a good option, but how is he doing after recovering from his ACL. He lost a step for sure.

I'd like this move. If Orlando really wants to dump his contract, then the Jazz should be all over it.

Allen is a good defender but sucks at offense. Pietrus is a much better and rounder player then allen.

Re: Go After Pietrus
pietrus is the only SF still on Orlando's team right now. Shard is a SF, but until they sign a bigger PF, or move Bass/Ryno into starting position, it is Shard. They arent looking to dump their only SF.

I love this idea. Trade for Pietus and sign Jarvis Haynes cheap. Then use the Mid level add a couple of big man like Haslem and Brown.

Re: Go After Pietrus
Pietrus is not the answer for what ails us. He would just tie up more CAP space for another wing. The Jazz have no intention of spending much money over the CAP unless it makes us into a serious contender. This type of suggestion is doesn't improve our post season expectations, so why do it?
